Scotland’s creative industries are benefiting from a major contribution from Gaelic broadcasting, MG ALBA, the Gaelic media service said today. BBC ALBA, the Gaelic TV channel, now produces more than 600 hours of programmes per year for national broadcast in Scotland.

Publishing MG ALBA’s Annual Report for the last year, Maggie Cunningham, chair, said: “We take great pride in the role that MG ALBA plays in stimulating economic activity within the burgeoning creative sector in Scotland, enabling 22 indigenous production companies to thrive.

MG ALBA Public Consultation

A public consultation undertaken by MG ALBA revealed a desire from some of the respondents to build more on the Gaelic culture.

Ms Cunningham said:" We continue to encourage the utmost care to Gaelic content in each and every programme. We are at one with the audience on this subject and we expect to make significant progress in the year to come."

The consultation also highlighted the need for MG ALBA and the channel to serve better the needs of younger people.

FilmG

FilmG, MG ALBA’s Gaelic short film competition has been launched with an event at Pacific Quay, the BBC Headquarters in Glasgow.

As well as a number of additional awards, including Best Script, Best Comedy Short and Best Animation, this year’s competition also sees the addition of an award for the Best Mobile Short. Entrants are asked to shoot at least 70% of their footage on a mobile device and funders MG ALBA believe this will lead to the creation of more user generated Gaelic content.

BBC ALBA Viewers

BBC ALBA’s new drama series Bannan has proved to be a major attraction for the channel’s Gaelic speaking audience. Bannan topped the third quarter of the 2014 viewing table, with the exceptionally high viewing figure of 62 per cent of the Gaelic audience for episode one; the most popular series since the Channel launched on Freeview in 2011.

A new online resource aimed at youngsters between 15-21 years with a keen interest in working in the media, specifically Gaelic media, have been launched by MG ALBA.

The information will provide invaluable advice for enthusiastic youngsters to develop and enhance their skills in the Gaelic media industry be it as a hobby or a possible career choice. As well as providing resources on career possibilities, study courses and work experience opportunities, they will be able to learn how some familiar faces in the sector got to where they are now.
