Professor Kenneth MacKinnon has undertaken substantial research into Gaelic communities in the Western Isles, Skye, and Cape Breton, and nationally for the EU Euromosaic Project. He has published extensively in the fields of language planning and research. He has been a consultant to the Western Isles Language Plan, BBC Broadcasting Research, and STV. He holds current professorial appointments at the Universities of Aberdeen and Hertfordshire ( in Celtic Studies, language planning and the sociology of language), and is a long-standing associate lecturer of the Open University in social sciences, education and language studies. He has undertaken extensive quality assessment work in higher education including Celtic Studies, linguistics, cultural and media studies. He is also a board member of Bòrd na Gàidhlig, and was a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group on Gaelic, and a contributor to the Meek Report.
