River City star launches Gaelic short film competition
FilmG, the Gaelic short film competition will be launched on Friday 27
June by actor Tony Kearney, star of River City. The launch will take place
at the Grosvenor Cinema in Glasgow at 11am.
The competition is MG ALBA’s first creative project following the
adoption of its new identity. It aims to uncover new onscreen and behind
camera talent for the new Gaelic digital service which is expecting to
be on air in early autumn. FilmG is not only an exciting chance for existing
and would-be film makers to showcase their talent, but also provides new
opportunities for Gaelic language and culture in the digital age.
FilmG will have professional, amateur and children’s categories
and will be open until 1 December 2008. Judging will take place after
this date. As well as £35,000 in cash prizes, MG ALBA will offer
winning teams the chance to develop broadcast pilots for the new Gaelic
channel.
FilmG will culminate in a spectacular awards party in January 2009 at
FÀS, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s centre for Gaelic culture
and creative industries on the Isle of Skye.
Though the finished shorts must be in Gaelic, the FilmG team will be at hand to help non Gaelic speaking entrants team up with Gaelic speakers in order to complete their projects.
Film making workshops on various aspects of short film making will be organised throughout the competition period and professional mentors will be contactable on the website, www.filmg.co.uk.
