PIPING LIVE! 2010 TO BE BROADCAST EXCLUSIVELY ON BBC ALBA
With Piping Live! 2010 taking Glasgow by storm this week, BBC ALBA is delighted to announce that it will be providing exclusive programmes to be broadcast on the channel throughout the year.
BBC ALBA will be providing extensive coverage of Piping Live! 2010 with the Gaelic channel set to broadcast four, one hour programmes featuring performances from some of the top acts throughout the festival including Breabach and Fred Morrison. An additional hour-long programme will focus on the World Pipe Band Championships which take place in Glasgow on Saturday 14 August and which will feature on BBC ALBA later in 2010.
Top Gaelic performer and musician Julie Fowlis will host the coverage from this year’s festival of piping, which is one of the most exciting annual celebrations of international piping and Scottish culture.
The first programme from Piping Live! 2010 will be screened on Saturday 28 August at 9pm on BBC ALBA and will feature ‘Suite for Alan’ which blends classical music and the music of piping legend Duncan Johnstone.
The second programme featuring a slice of life from the street café and Fred Morrison in concert will air on Saturday 4 September with the remaining programmes being broadcast later in the year. Piping Live! 2010 is produced by Bees Nees Media for BBC ALBA.
This year, organisers have also added a programme of Gaelic events and piping films to the official event schedule. Òrain nam Pìobairean (The Song of the Pipes) will include film screenings, workshops and Gaelic taster sessions which will take place at the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) in, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. The Òrain nam Pìobairean event is supported this year by MG ALBA, Bees Nees, macTV, BBC Gàidhlig and also Bòrd na Gàidhlig.
Piping Live! has established itself as one of the world’s top celebrations of piping and Scottish culture, giving Glasgow an estimated economic boost of around £2.4 million. This year’s festival will showcase a diverse blend of traditional and modern piping from the stars of the international scene to some of today’s most electrifying young musicians at venues including The Old Fruitmarket and the National Piping Centre.
Full information on all Piping Live events and ticket information is available on www.pipinglive.co.uk or from the National Piping Centre on 0141 353 0220.
