CALLING ALL TEENAGERS - THIS IS ‘BREAB’
Wednesday 13 May 2009, 6pm, BBC ALBA
An exciting new teenage reality series titled ‘BREAB’ (‘Kick’) which will follow six talented young Gaels on a journey of discovery, has been produced for BBC ALBA.
Over the series you’ll see six teenagers, all from a variety of backgrounds, spend eight days living together and taking on character building challenges both in the great outdoors and the big smoke of Glasgow. Challenges range form skinning a rabbit to directing a music video, as the cameras roll throughout.
BBC Producer, Donna Murchison said: “Breab is a reality style show that throws six Gaelic speaking teenagers together into the unknown. All strangers to each other at first, through a series of physical and creative challenges, their true personalities are revealed and friendships form.
“Speaking Gaelic is the one thing they all have in common and the level of fluency is mixed but Breab represents real teens growing up in rural and urban Scotland with Gaelic being spoken in the home or being learned in school. Alex, Cassie, Danny, Kayanna, Màiri and Pàdruig are a real inspiration to young learners and native speakers alike. It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it.”
Auditions took pace throughout Scotland and the chosen six include:
Padruig aged 16 from Barra – Padruig loves traditional music including the Vatersay Boys and a bit of Johnny Cash. He has a boat called ‘The Mary C’ which he uses to go creel fishing and wants to get his skipper’s ticket. Padruig is a great piper and a fluent Gaelic speaker.

Màiri aged 14 from Skye – Mary is a talented accordion player who describes herself as unusual and happy and likes to laugh – a lot. She enjoys spending time with her friends at home in Skye and cannot imagine living on the mainland. Looking ahead, Mary’s not sure what she wants to do; be a writer, work in an office or nothing at all.
Cassie aged 15 from Glasgow – Cassie is a fabulous soul singer and designs her own clothes. Cassie loves cooking Nigerian food and hopes to visit her family in Nigeria before going to university to study French. Cassie hopes to be a French teacher and is a Gaelic learner who loves to speak Gaelic with her school friends.
Kayanna aged 15 from Lewis – Kayanna is a great clàrsach player and has been a regular Mòd attendee for years. At first, Kayanna comes across as shy but soon opens up. She loves spending time with friends and family and would like to be a primary teacher or work in the media, either way, putting her Gaelic to good use.
Alex aged 16 from Tain – Alex, a great artist, describes himself as confident and funny who likes to read a lot and debates on whether or not he is an intellectual. Alex is an aspiring politician and would like to study politics, law or Gaelic; his delivery of Gaelic is unique.
Danny aged 15 from Glasgow – Danny, a Gaelic learner, is the sporty one who loves rugby, boxing and football and would like to be a PE teacher. Danny has been learning the guitar for a year and his favourite band is The Killers.
‘BREAB’ will be broadcast weekly, over six weeks, on BBC ALBA starting on Wednesday 13th May at 6pm. (‘BREAB’ will also be shown on Thursdays on BBC Two Scotland.)
