SATURDAY’S GLASGOW CELTIC SOCIETY SHINTY CUP FINAL TO BE TELEVISED LIVE ON BBC ALBA
The 105th anniversary of the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final, taking place this Saturday, 27 June, which will see Oban Camanachd take on current holders Inveraray, will be broadcast live on BBC ALBA.
The Glasgow Celtic Cup Final remains one of the major occasions in the shinty calendar and this Saturday’s match, being hailed the Argyll derby, will be broadcast live from Old Anniesland, Glasgow at 4pm on BBC ALBA.
In the 105 years of the Celtic cup competition Inveraray and Oban Camanachd have previously met only three times, in 1995, '96 and '99, with Inveraray winning all three matches. Inveraray have appeared in nine of the last 10 finals and winning eight. Oban Camanachd's last appearance was in 2005 when they triumphed over Bute by 7-4. If Inveraray win on Saturday, brothers Graeme & Gary MacPherson will equal the record of holding 11 winners medals each.
Half time features on BBC ALBA will include highlights from last week’s Marine Harvest Clash of the Camans Final between Glenurquhart and Kingussie as well as an interview with Zambian-born Scottish internationalist Eddie Tembo, a midfielder for Glenurquhart.
Gary Innes will also be taking Cailean Collier through his paces in lesson three of his ‘Shinty Skills’, this week demonstrating the art of dribbling and shooting.
A new event for Gaelic Medium Primary Education Units in the Central Belt, titled ‘FÈIS SPÒRS’, a festival of sport, run by the Glasgow Celtic Society, will commence this Saturday at 1pm prior to the cup final.
‘FÈIS SPÒRS’ has been organised in partnership with the Camanachd Association and is supported by MG ALBA, the Gaelic Media Service.
Hugh Dan MacLennan, sports broadcaster and former shinty player, will be commentating on Saturday’s match live for BBC ALBA along with Calum MacAulay.
Hugh Dan said: “This is shinty’s oldest competition and having Saturday’s final broadcast live on the new Gaelic channel BBC ALBA, is a fitting way to celebrate the competition’s 105th anniversary. With the innovation of the experimental changes in the rules and the launch of the new festival of sport for young participants, Saturday is shaping up to be quite an occasion indeed.
“BBC ALBA is delighted to be there and pleased to see Oban Camanachd getting back into cup finals. It will be interesting for fans to see how Oban copes with Inveraray given that Inveraray have made the trophy their own in the last few years.”
