ANN AN CÒI5 (IN FIVE)
Thursday 16 July at 6.55pm on BBC ALBA
The fourth in a new series of five minute programmes on BBC ALBA, presented by young Gaelic speakers aged 10 to 13, will follow 12 year old horse lover Elspeth Hayes from Cuthill near Dornoch, as she spends time on her grandmother’s farm.
‘Ann an Còi5’, meaning ‘In Five’ has been produced by independent company Sealladh, set up by Morag Stewart and Chris Young of Young Films in 2008. The young Gaelic presenters, with the help of the Sealladh team, have scripted, presented and conducted interviews for each of the programmes in the new series.
The series allows youngsters to tell the story of something which is very special to them, whether it be a place, pastime or person. Elspeth Hayes, a pupil at Tain Academy, will present the next programme being broadcast on Thursday 16 July on BBC ALBA.
Elspeth’s love of horses is a result of spending almost all of her spare time at her Grandmother, Pat’s farm, home to 19 horses and where Elspeth helps Pat keep up with all the hard work involved.
Learning to ride at a very young age Elspeth is now quite confident and experienced round horses. She has recently bought a young horse, Rio, who needs a lot of training, a job that Elspeth is largely doing on her own with help from Pat and her mother Lesley. Elspeth also competes in pony club competitions and this year she will travel to Perth to compete in regional competitions.
As well as seeing Elspeth tend to her stable duties and her training sessions with Rio, the programme will also provide an insight into Elspeth’s favourite places to trek with Rio, the peaceful wood behind the farm and the long stretch of sand that lies beyond Eaglefield.
During the programme Elspeth interviews her mother, Lesley who is also a keen horse rider and who was introduced to riding in quite an unconventional manner.
The new series ‘Ann an Còi5’ has given emerging talent both behind and in front of the camera the opportunity to produce and broadcast their creative material. The stories have been brought to life by a production team which included young talent working in new challenging roles assisted and mentored throughout the production process.
‘Ann an Còi5’ will be broadcast on BBC ALBA on Thursday 16 July at 18:55 and is available on Sky channel 168 & Freesat channel 110.
