BBC ALBA’S EÒRPA EXAMINES DIABETES RATES IN SCOTLAND
Wednesday 5 October, 8.30pm on BBC ALBA
In the next programme of the new series of BBC ALBA’s Eòrpa, Roddy Munro reports on the worrying rates of diabetes in Scotland.
The number of people with diabetes in Scotland is on the increase according to a recent survey from Diabetes UK. Alarmingly, more younger people are being diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 of the disease. Undiagnosed cases are particularly worrying as going untreated can have serious long term health implications. In the Western Isles the number of people with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes is more than double the national average.
Jane-Claire Judson, National Director at Diabetes UK Scotland, said: "People might go 10 years with Type 2 diabetes without knowing they have the condition, in that time they might develop complications of the condition, things like foot disease, sight loss and kidney damage and these are very serious."
Also in next week's programme Eòrpa reporter Darren Laing examines Croatia's plans to join the EU whilst Iain Macinnes reports on a controversial harbour development in Iceland.
Produced by BBC Gàidhlig, Eòrpa’s weekly series will broadcast on BBC ALBA commencing Wednesday 5 October at 8.30pm and each consecutive Wednesday.
