AWARD WINNING EÒRPA COMMEMORATES 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARANDORA STAR SINKING ON BBC ALBA
To mark the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the Arandora Star, during the Second World War, BBC ALBA repeats an award-winning special edition of Eorpa (first broadcast in 2005) on Wednesday 7 July at 8.30pm.
Derek Mackay explores the story of the vessel which was sunk by a German torpedo during the Second World War. Many of the passengers on board the Arandora Star were Italian internees who were being sent by the British authorities to Canada. Hundreds of them lost their lives when the Arandora Star was sunk.
Bodies were washed ashore in the Scottish islands, where many locals were powerfully affected by the tragedy. Derek Mackay speaks to an Arandora Star survivor, to Scottish islanders with memories of the incident, and also to families of victims in Italy and in Scotland, exploring the enduring effect the tragedy had on many lives.
