Fàilte bho MG ALBA!

MG ALBA has enjoyed a busy summer. Broadcasting on Freeview and Cable, coupled with Satellite services, has enabled all households in Scotland and beyond to access BBC ALBA which is now attracting 530,000 viewers per week. This proves that the channel is attracting both native speakers and learners of the language.

BBC ALBA’s Autumn schedule was launched on 8 September and we hope you are enjoying what we have to offer. Further programme information later.

We were also pleased to announce the launch of a new interactive website providing a one-stop-shop for anyone interested in learning Gaelic. LearnGaelic.net is the result of a unique collaboration between Bòrd na Gàidhlig, MG ALBA, the BBC, the Board of Celtic Studies Scotland and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. LearnGaelic.net has also received financial support from the Scottish Government and co-operation on the project has also been received from Ainmean Àite na h-Alba, Am Faclair Beag, Cànan, Clì Gàidhlig, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Education Scotland, Mòr Media, Open University, Sealgar, SQA, Stòrlann and Ùlpan.

We’re very excited to bring the Celtic Media Festival 2012 to Derry-Londonderry. Derry has a rich and vibrant cultural heritage and with the eyes of the world beginning to turn to the city in the run up to its year as City of Culture in 2013, there is a tremendous sense of creative energy emanating from the region. Getting to know... Chris MacDonald

Chris is MG ALBA’s new Technical Services Director, having previously been a camera operator for nearly 20 years. Chris hails from Point and now lives in Lochs with his wife Màiri and son Ruairidh.

How did you come to work in the industry?

I started with Grampian TV in Aberdeen in 1991. I was trained in the camera department which I really enjoyed. I returned home in 1993, when the Grampian TV studio opened in Stornoway, to work on the news. We worked on all the Gaelic programming that Grampian TV were producing at that time.

I worked there until I became self-employed and then was able to travel all over the world working on different programmes like drama, sports, documentaries etc.

What does your job entail?

I look after the teams in Stornoway and Skye. Dè tha Dol? use our Stornoway facilities and the team also record the continuity pieces that you see and hear between programmes.

We also carry out technical reviews on most of the programmes broadcast on BBC ALBA so that keeps us busy!

Chris MacDonald
