VOTE FOR YOUR SONG OF THE YEAR AS BLIADHNA NAN ÒRAN CULMINATES ON BBC ALBA

Throughout 2010 BBC ALBA and Radio nan Gaidheal have been celebrating ‘Bliadhna nan Òran’ - ‘The Year of Song’ offering an unparalleled line-up of programmes featuring a wealth of Gaelic singing talent both from the archives and newly produced programmes.

Produced by BBC Gàidhlig, The Year of Gaelic Song has been celebrated with some of the best songs selected from the BBC’s extensive Gaelic song archive for radio and television broadcast throughout 2010, supported by a dedicated website www.bbc.co.uk/oran.

Now viewers and listeners are being given the opportunity to participate in the landmark project by voting for their favourite song. 12 songs were selected from the 365 ‘Songs for the Day’ played on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal throughout the year. The results will be announced on BBC ALBA’s live Hogmanay show at 10pm and simultaneously on Radio nan Gaidheal, as well as being available online from 11.30pm.

Three experts evaluated the songs according to language, rhythm and how the music or tune befits the poetry, rather than the individual performance chosen for Song for the Day. The judging panel were Arthur Cormack, Myles Campbell and Morag Macleod with Jo MacDonald as Chairperson.

The songs selected for the vote are:

-An Eala Bhàn
-B’ annsa Cadal air Fraoch
-Bha Mo Leannan Ann
-Ceud Soraidh Slàn don Mhaighdinn
-Eala nan Cuaintean
-Eilean Beag Donn a’ Chuain
-Fear a’ Chòta Ruaidh
-Màiri Bhàn Òg
-Nam Aonar le mo Smuaintean
-Tha an Gràdh Seo Cho Làidir
-Tha Mi Fo Smuairean air Moch Diluain
-Thig Trì Nithean Gun Iarraidh

Margaret Mary Murray, Head of Service for BBC ALBA, said: “Bliadhna nan Òran has been a resounding success from an audience perspective and we hope that our audiences will grasp this opportunity and tell us what their favourite song is from the shortlisted numbers.”

Information about each song along with an opportunity to listen before voting is available via www.bbc.co.uk/oran. A postal vote is also available, call 01851 705000 for a voting form. Voting closes on Monday 13 December.
