MG ALBA CONGRATULATES CELTIC MEDIA FESTIVAL NOMINATIONS

MG ALBA, who work in partnership with the BBC to broadcast BBC ALBA, has expressed its delight at the news that several of the channel’s programmes have been shortlisted for awards at the Celtic Media Festival 2011.

The 32nd Celtic Media Festival will return to the Western Isles in 2011, the home of the first festival in 1980. The An Lanntair Arts Centre in Stornoway will be the main venue for the Celtic broadcasting and media world to come together from April 13th to 15th to celebrate the languages and cultures of the Celtic countries on screen and in broadcasting.

Nominations were received for the awards across 19 categories with BBC ALBA achieving seven programme nominations in several different award categories.

Furthermore, throughout 2010 BBC ALBA and Radio nan Gaidheal have been celebrating Bliadhna nan Òran - The Year of Song offering an unparalleled line-up of programmes featuring a wealth of Gaelic singing talent both from the archives and newly produced programmes. Produced by BBC Gàidhlig, Bliadhna nan Òran has been supported by a dedicated website www.bbc.co.uk/alba/oran which has been shortlisted in the Digital Media - Kieran Hegarty Award category for Interactivity.

BBC ALBA programmes shortlisted include:

  • Na h-Òganich – the programme charts the return of legendary Gaelic group Na h-Òganaich to the recording studio to see if they can recapture their old magic. Nominated in the Factual Entertainment category. (Produced by Alasdair MacLean - BBC Gàidhlig)

  • Bothan air' a Phrèiridh – a factual documentary about Iain MacPherson and Ewen MacKay as they embark in a journey home over space and time to the Canadian prairies - to the emptiness and growth at the heart of family stories and separations. Nominated in the Factual Single category. (Produced by Mark Littlewood- Pelicula Films Ltd)

  • Trump: An Tilleadh – documentary examining the Gaelic heritage of US billionaire Donald Trump, who is one generation away from being a Gaelic speaker. Patricia Macleod travels to New York to speak to his family and gains exclusive access as Trump visits the Isle of Lewis during a visit to Scotland. Nominated in the Factual Single category.   • Turas A' Bhradain - Series 2 (Prog 1 - 'Na Hearadh') - Neen MacKay explores Scotland's fishing rivers, focusing on the journey of the spring salmon. Nominated in the Sport category. (Produced by Patsi MacKenzie – STV Productions)

  • Aonghas Pàdraig Caimbeul: Meas air Chrannaibh - Angus Peter Campbell discusses his life and work in a frank interview with Father Colin MacInnes. Starting with his roots in South Uist, Angus charts his early success as a journalist at Grampian TV, through turbulent years battling alcohol addiction, to his acclamation as a novelist, actor and poet. Nominated in the Arts category. (Produced by Terry Wolsey - Eyeline Media)

  • Eòrpa: Eigneachadh ann an Bosnia - Angela MacLean reports on cases of rape during the Bosnian war and on how some women feel they do not receive enough support. Nominated in the Current Affairs category. (Produced by Hedda MacLeod - BBC Gàidhlig)

  • Breab - Six talented young Gaels go on a journey of discovery, spending eight days living together and taking on character building challenges in the great outdoors - from skinning a rabbit to directing a music video - with the cameras rolling throughout. Nominated in the Young People category. (Produced by Donnie MacLeod - BBC Gàidhlig)

In addition, BBC Radio nan Gàidheal who won the hotly contested Radio Station of the Year category at last year’s festive is in the running for the title again this year, as well as receiving several nominations including Seirbheis Cuimhneachaidh Hiort and Uaigneas in the Best Radio Documentary category while popular presenter Cathy MacDonald has been nominated in the Radio Presenter/Personality category.
