BBC ALBA’S EÒRPA RETURNS TO OUR SCREENS WITH AN EXAMINATION INTO DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR UTOYA ISLAND

BBC ALBA’s award-winning current affairs programme Eòrpa is back with a new series examining the most important stories from across Europe.

In the first programme of the new series, Eòrpa takes us back to the island of Utøya in Norway, where 69 people were massacred last year by right-wing fanatic Anders Behring Breivik in an attack that shocked the world, and examines plans by the AUF (Worker’s Youth League) to develop the Island.

Eòrpa reveals how these redevelopment plans have caused an outcry from survivors and bereaved parents who wish the island to remain as a memorial. Many of the parents who lost their young feel that they have been kept in the dark and had no idea about these plans until they were broadcast shortly after the conclusion of Anders Behring Breivik’s court case.

This development, for many, comes too soon after what happened and this small island, once again, finds itself at the centre of debate.

Also in the programme, Eòrpa visits Germany, where nearly 100 baby ‘hutches’ have been established around the country in an effort to reduce the number of infants who die due to being abandoned. But, by some, this is seen as controversial as the mother is able to remain anonymous and consequently robbing the child of any knowledge of their parental identity.

In its 20 years of broadcasting, award winning current affairs series Eòrpa strives to highlight stories, often from lesser known parts of Europe, which receive little or no publicity in the wider media. The series has reported on some of the most fascinating, life-changing and historical events to have occurred in Europe - from the Balkan war, to the aftermath of the meltdown at Chernobyl; from the massacre in Beslan, to the impact of current austerity measures in Greece.

Produced by BBC Gàidhlig, Eòrpa transmits every Wednesday at 8.30pm on BBC ALBA, repeated on Fridays at 7.30pm and also on BBC2 Scotland at 7.30pm on Saturdays.

EÒRPA A’ TILLEADH LE RANNSACHADH AIRSON PLANAICHEAN LEASACHAIDH UTOYA

Tha Eòrpa air ais le sreath ùr a bhios a’ cur a’ phrosbaig air cuid de na sgeulachdan as cudromaiche bho air feadh na Roinn Eòrpa.

Anns a’ chiad phrògram tha Eòrpa a’ tilleadh chun an Nirribhidh, far a bheil planaichean aig an AUF (Buidheann Òigridh Pàrtaidh Làbarach na dùthcha) ath-leasachadh a dhèanamh air Eilean Utoya, far na chaill còrr is 60 òganach am beatha ann an ionnsaigh a chuir uabhas air an t-saoghal.

Tha cuid a phàrantan a chaill clann air Utoya a’ faireachdainn gu bheil iad gu mòr air iomall gnothaichean, gun fhios idir aca mu na planaichean gus an tàinig iad gu aire a’ mhòr-shluaigh, beagan às dèidh cùis-lagh Anders Behring Breivik.

Tha an ath-leasachadh a tha seo, dha feadhainn, a’ tighinn ro aithghearr às dèidh na thachair agus tha an eilean beag seo a-rithist ann an teis-meadhan deasbaid.

Cuideachd sa phrògram tha Eòrpa a’ tadhal air a’ Ghearmailt far a bheil faisg air 100 ‘hutch’ air an stèidheachadh air feadh na dùthcha ann an oidhirp na h-àireamhan de leanaban a tha a’ bàsachadh às dèidh dhaibh a bhith air am fàgail leotha fhèin.

Thairis air 20 bliadhna de chraoladh tha Eòrpa, a tha air duaisean a buannachadh, air feuchainn ri sgeulachdan air nach eil fios aig duine agus gu tric bho àiteachean a tha iomallach, a thoirt gu aire dhaoine, bho chogadh na Balkans gu Chernobyl agus murt Beslan gu eaconomaidh na Grèige.

Air a riochdachadh le BBC Gàidhlig, chìthear Eòrpa gach Diciadain aig 8.30f air BBC ALBA le ath-chraoladh gach Dihaoine aig 7.30f agus cuideachd air BBC2 Scotland aig 7.30 gach Disathairne
