TOP SCOTS AND IRISH MUSICAL STARS SET FOR BBC ALBA

Based around sessions between traditional musicians from both countries, Dà Fhillte explores the musical ties that bind Scotland and Ireland.

Filmed on location in Glasgow, a city which has fostered the musical forms of both Highland and Irish diaspora, Dà- Fhillte is presented by Julie Fowlis and Muireann NicAmhlaoibh, two internationally acclaimed musicians and singers who remain close to their cultural roots.

Both are the living embodiment of Dà-Fhillte; musicians raised on the edge of their respective countries and steeped in musical tradition, but who have a mutual respect for their respective traditions. They, along with musical director Phil Cunningham, form the hub around which the series revolves.

Cunningham frames the Dà-Fhillte character with the clarity informed by his forty years as a musician saying: "Ireland and Scotland have got a long history of shared music and I think, as people, they have the same soul and the same heart. So, when you're working with Irish musicians and with Scottish musicians, I think they both want the same out of it; they want excitement out of the exciting tunes and a little bit of soul out of the sad tunes."

Recruiting that cast of musicians, with the emphasis on traditional song as well as some transcendental playing, was a task that Cunningham relished, because all of the musicians make virtuosity appear effortless. The house band, for instance, was drawn from both Ireland and from Scotland and made up of percussionist David Foley; consummate fiddle players Duncan Chisholm and Dónal O'Connor; genius multi-instrumentalists Matheu Watson and Caoimhín Ó Fearghail; pre-eminent Uilleann piper, Jarlath Henderson and Cunningham himself, switching easily between accordion and piano.

This de facto super-group are the foundation on which the BBC ALBA series is built, with guest musicians and singers performing alongside Julie, Muireann, Phil and band to spell-binding effect. Dropping in on the sessions are singers, pipers and fiddlers, including Chris Stout, Finlay MacDonald, Calum Stewart and Lauren MacColl. Trading songs will be Maeve MacKinnon, Sean Nós singers Saileog Ní Cheannabháin and Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhrìde and James Graham; luminaries of the Irish and Scottish music scene.

The sentiments of Calum Stewart, the Morayshire-raised flautist and piper, mirror those of Phil Cunningham. Calum said: “ Playing tunes and swapping ideas; I think that’s where we learn the most from these collaborations. It can be quite a lonely existence otherwise. It’s great to get together and just have fun and share music.”

Dà-Fhillte, produced by Bees Nees, begins on BBC ALBA on Saturday 16 March at 10pm and can be seen again on Wednesday 20th March at 10.55pm.

Prìomh luchd-ciùil Albannach agus Èirinneach air BBC ALBA

Stèidhichte air seiseanan ciùil le luchd-ciùil traidiseanta à Alba agus Èireann, tha Dà-Fhillte a’ soilleireachadh nan snaidhmeannan ceòlmhor a tha a’ ceangal an dà dhùthaich.

Chaidh Dà-Fhillte a chlàradh ann an Glaschu, baile a tha mion-eòlach air stoidhlichean ciùil nan Gàidheal agus nan Èireannach agus tha na prògraman air an lìbhrigeadh le Julie Fowlis agus Muireann NicAmhlaoibh, dithis air th’ air cliù ’s inbhe a chosnadh nan seinneadairean `s nan cluicheadairean a tha a’ cumail dlùth rin dualchas cultarail. ’S ann timcheall air eòlas an dithis seo agus an stiùiriche-ciùil, Phil Coineagan, a tha an sreath seo stèidhichte.

Bha e an urra ri Coineagan luchd-ciùil sònraichte a thaghadh airson òrain traidiseanta agus ceòl barraichte a thaisbeanadh tron t-sreath seo, dùbhlan a bha air leth tlachdmhor dha,’s comasan agus sgilean na thagh e cho sònraichte. Mar eisimpleir, bha am prìomh chòmhlan a’ taisbeanadh cluicheadairean à Alba agus Èireann, nam measg bha neach-faramachd Daibhidh Foley; na fìdhlearan Donnchadh Siosal agus Dónal O’Connor; na cluicheadairean ealanta Mattheu Watson agus Caoimhín Ó Fearghail; am pìobaire-uilne sònraichte, Jarlath Henderson agus Phil Coineagan fhèin, air a’ bhocsa-ciùil agus air a’ phiàna.

Tha an còmhlan sònraichte seo mar bhun-stèidh dhan t-sreath air fad, ’s e a’ taisbeanadh aoighean tàlantach a’ tighinn a sheinn ’s a chluich còmhla ri Julie, Muireann, Phil agus an còmhlan seo. Am measg na tha tadhal air na seiseanan, tha seinneadairean, pìobairean ’s fìdhlearan, leithid, Chris Stout, Fionnlagh Dòmhnallach, Calum Stiùbhairt agus Lauren NicColla. A bharrachd air a seo, tha cuid de na seinneadairean as aithnichte ann an Èireann agus Alba a’ nochdadh san t-sreath, nam measg tha Maeve NicFhionghain, na seinneadairean Sean Nós Saileog Ní Cheannabháin agus Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhrìde agus Seumas Greumach.

Tha beachdan Chalum Stiùbhairt, pìobaire ’s cluicheadair tàlantach a chaidh a thogail ann an Siorrachd Mhoireibh, a’ cheart cho làidir ’s cho brosnachail ri beachdan Phil Choineagain fhèin. Thuirt Calum, “’S ann tro bhith a’ tighinn còmhla a chluich ceòl agus bho a bhith a’ sgaoileadh puirt gu gach a chèile as motha a dh’ionnsaich neach-ciùil sam bith. Às aonais com-pàirteachas dha leithid, ’s urrainn dha neach a bhith gu math aonranach. Mar sin, tha luach mhòr air cruinneachaidhean mar seo, agus tha gu leòr spòrs na mheasg cuideachd.”

Tha Dà-Fhillte, a th’ air a riochdachadh le Bees Nees, a’ tòiseachadh air BBC ALBA air Disathairne an 16mh den Mhàrt aig 10f, le cothrom a chiad phrògram fhaicinn arithist air Diciadain 20mh Màrt aig 10.55f.
