CAPERCAILLIE AND DOUGIE MACLEAN HEADLINE TV COVERAGE OF HEBCELT 2013 EXCLUSIVELY ON BBC ALBA

Live from Lews Castle Green in Stornoway, BBC ALBA will feature some of the best performances from the main stage at this year’s Hebridean Celtic Festival as part of its exclusive television coverage.

The 18th HebCelt has again attracted an exciting line-up of top bands and BBC ALBA are delighted to announce that it will be showcasing live performances from headline acts including Capercaillie, Dougie Maclean, Battlefield Band and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, amongst many more.

This will be the fourth year the festival has produced shows for BBC ALBA and the second year of live coverage from the award-winning event.

BBC ALBA presenter Niall Iain Macdonald will bring viewers two shows capturing the excitement from the main festival arena. The programmes will be broadcast on BBC ALBA on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 July at 10pm.

Friday’s programme will kick-off with live coverage from the set by Battlefield Band, who for over four decades have led the way for Scotland with their inspired fusion of ancient and modern traditional music and song.

Following this will be more great music from Capercaillie who, ahead of the release of their 30th anniversary album next month, will take to the stage to perform some of their much loved songs that have led to them being a major force in bringing Celtic contemporary music to the world stage.

Also featuring on Friday night’s show will be modern folk music's most innovative band, Lau whose latest album 'Race The Loser' was shortlisted for Album Of The Year by BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

If Friday night wasn’t enough then viewers have another exciting line-up of live music to enjoy on Saturday night with BBC ALBA providing coverage from folk legend Dougie MacLean who this year has been voted into the HebCelt Hall of Fame.

Dougie MacLean

Dougie, one of Scotland's pre-eminent singer/songwriters, is internationally renowned for his song Caledonia – regarded as Scotland’s alternative national anthem. After starting out nearly 40 years ago, Dougie received an OBE for his services to music and received a lifetime achievement award at this year’s Radio Two Folk Awards. HebCelt will be the first, and one of only a select number of festivals, to feature his special line-up, The MacLean Project – a nine-piece band with Dougie on vocals, guitar, fiddle and digeridoo.

This performance will be complemented by live music from the young gifted button accordion player, Paddy Callaghan – recent winner of the prestigious BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2013 title. Paddy is renowned for an energetic style and an entertaining personality on stage and is sure to be a hit with the TV audience.

It’s then the turn of the Red Hot Chilli Pipers to entertain BBC ALBA viewers and the HebCelt audience with a grand finale containing fusions of traditional pipe tunes and contemporary anthems. Having taken their signature 'Bagrock' sound to the masses, the Chillis have become a global phenomenon.

Alan Esslemont, Head of Content for BBC ALBA, said: “Following last year’s successful HebCelt coverage we are very excited to be returning to the festival this year to bring viewers two special shows packed with live action from some of the main headline acts. HebCelt is a festival not to be missed, renowned for its unique atmospheric vibe, and we are pleased to be offering the festival to a wider audience through our television coverage.”

Caroline MacLennan, HebCelt festival director said: “We are delighted BBC ALBA is showing live coverage from the festival for the second year in succession and showcasing the event for the fourth year overall.

“The extensive coverage ensures music fans who can’t make it to HebCelt this year can still enjoy some of the great bands and special atmosphere.”

The 18th HebCelt is attracting attention from around the world with tickets having already been snapped up by fans across the UK and Ireland, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America.

However, for those who can’t make it in person, tune in to BBC ALBA for coverage of live performances from throughout the festival on Friday 19 July and Saturday 20 July at 10pm.
