A HOOKER’S JOURNEY ON BBC ALBA

A three-part series will be broadcast on BBC ALBA, in which three mariners from Connemara take to the high-seas of the old Gaelic Kingdoms round Ireland, the Isle of Man, and Scotland, to sail 3,000 miles in search of their history, culture and heritage.

Donncha, Cillín, and Tomás leave home seeking what remains of their native ethnicity on the shores of the wild Atlantic, meeting experts and local communities along the way and travelling on the most Gaelic sailboat still around, the Naomh Bairbre, a Galway Hooker.

‘Turas Huiceara’ / ‘A Hooker's Journey’ will follow the mariners as they visit Skye, the Western Isles, Orkney and St. Kilda - the haunting and deserted island off Western Scotland – as well as the famed Loch Ness in the Highlands and other magical locations that can only be reached by sea.

The breaking of the Naomh Bairbre’s boom and a crash in Scotland doesn't stop this expedition, during which they discover the largest colony of gannets in the world, inhabiting some of the tallest sea stacks of Europe.

On their travels, they also find the ceremonial cup of the old High King of Ireland hidden away in a castle in Skye and hear that the Patron Saint of Ireland, Columba, had much blood on his hands.

Combining dramatic footage with evocative music, this series will bring the taste of sea-salt to your screen, act as a reminder of the shared heritage of Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man and allow viewers to see themselves as others see them.

The series was produced by Léirithe DMCI for TG4 and forms part of the WITBN (World Indigenous Television Broadcasters Network) programme exchange where WITBN members share knowledge, insight and programme content that will inform and entertain each other’s audiences.

The three-part series, ‘Turas Huiceara’ / ‘A Hooker's Journey’, is being broadcast on BBC ALBA on Friday 12th April at 9pm, Friday 19th April at 9.30pm and the concluding programme going out on Friday 26th April at 9pm.

TURAS HUICEARA AIR BBC ALBA

Sgeulachd mu triùir sheòltairean à Conamara a tha a’ siubhal 3000 mìle tarsainn air costa na h-Èireann, Eilean Mhanainn agus Alba air lorg cheanglaichean eachdraidheil, chultarail agus dhualchasach.

Tha Donncha, Cillín agus Tomás a’ fàgail an dachaigh agus iad a’ seòladh air fear de na bàtaichean aca, an Galway Hooker, a’ sireadh na tha air fhàgail den cuid dualchais air iomall a’ Chuain Sgìth far am bi iad a’ coinneachadh ri diofar dhaoine agus choimhearsnachdan air an t-slighe.

Tha ‘Turas Huiceara’ a’ leantainn nan seòltairean ’s iad a’ tadhal air an Eilean Sgitheanach, na h-Eileanan an Iar, Arcaibh agus eilean ainmeil Hiort – a bharrachd air Loch Nis agus àiteachean tarraingeach, ainmeil eile nach ruigeadh daoine às aonais bàta.

Air an t-slighe tha iad a’ lorg seann chupa a bhithte a’ cleachdadh an lùib deas-ghnàthan a bhuineadh do sheann Rìgh na h-Èireann air falach ann an caisteal air an Eilean Sgitheanach agus gheibh iad a-mach gun robh tòrr fuil air làmhan an Naoimh Cholm Chille.

Eadar ceòl sònraichte agus seallaidhean àlainn, bheir an t-sreath seo blas an t-sàil chun luchd-amhairc agus cuiridh iad barrachd eòlais air na ceanglaichean dualchasach a tha eadar Alba, Èirinn agus Eilean Mhanainn.

Chaidh Turas Huiceara a riochdachadh le Léirithe DMCI airson TG4 agus tha e mar phàirt den ceangal a th’ ann tro WITBN (Lìonradh Eadar-nàiseanta de Chraoladairean Telebhisean Dùthchasail)
