RICKY ROSS FEATURES IN A ONE-OFF SPECIAL ON BBC ALBA

Deacon Blue legend, Ricky Ross will be featuring in an exclusive one-off part documentary, part in-concert film produced for BBC ALBA.

The revealing film ‘RICKY ROSS’ captures Ross on tour, playing in venues as diverse as Union Chapel in London, the Gardyne Theatre in Dundee and the backdrop of Barlinnie Prison. Ross toured intimate venues all over the UK to promote his sixth solo album, ‘Trouble Came Looking’ – a collection of songs that reflect tough economic times.

Narrated by broadcaster and presenter Cathy MacDonald, the film sees Ross on the road with only his guitarist Gregor Philp, manager Tom O'Rourke and some acoustic guitars for company.

His rationale for the no-frills touring was: “To turn up in a car or something in a place, with a piano set up and a PA and we would just turn up and just play some songs.”

The film sees him during soundchecks and onstage and features candid asides about songwriting, compassion and his strong sense of social justice.

The 'Untold Stories' tour in April and May took Ross away from the rock and pop circuit as he travelled to locations as diverse as Stornoway, Ullapool and Kirkwall - a world away from metropolitan London and the confines of Barlinnie.

His decision to play the notorious prison was informed by his faith and the power of redemption: “Religious faith, for me, has always been something which has led towards social justice… very often things turn around. Things change. People change, Amazing things do happen.”

‘Trouble Came Looking For Me’, the song that opened each night on the tour, carries weight and resonance when played to a prison audience. It also shows how strongly Ross identifies with his audience.

The film also features a concert set from the Gardyne Theatre in his Dundee hometown. Ross explains that the venue has great significance for him because it was where he played his first gig. There, fans are treated to acoustic versions of Deacon Blue classics and new tracks from ‘Trouble Came Looking’ – songs which sound instantly familiar.

Perhaps unexpectedly, the Dundee concert cements his reputation as a raconteur as he frames each song with a story. Ross creates an inclusive performance, quickly establishing a rapport with the crowd in Dundee and encouraging audience singing, an invitation rewarded as the crowd take over the choruses of ‘The Germans Are Out Today’, lending the song, written for his late father, extra poignancy.

His talent as an entertainer and charisma are offset by a confession of crippling self-doubt prior to the solo tour: “I've had experience before of just doing solo shows and - this may sound really odd - and I've said, "I'm not sure if I've got the constitution to do it."”

At the same time, the songwriter long ago realised that his business demands focus and ambition: “If you don’t have some bit of you that actually believes that you can actually succeed then there’s no point doing it.”

It's a testament to his determination and prodigious talent as a songwriter that Ross has remained at the top of his game for twenty-seven years. ‘RICKY ROSS’ shines light on one of Scotland's enduring musical talents.

Produced by Bees Nees Media, ‘RICKY ROSS’ will be broadcast on BBC ALBA at 9pm on 8 June 2013.

RICKY ROSS AIR BBC ALBA

Thèid am pàirt aithriseachd, pàirt film cuirm-chiùil, ‘RICKY ROSS’ a chraoladh air BBC ALBA air an 8mh Ògmhios 2013. Tha am film inntinneach seo a’ toirt sùil air Ross ’s e air chuairt, ’s e a’ cluich ann an iomadach àite eadar-dhealaichte air feadh Bhreatainn, an leithid, Seipeil an Aonaidh ann an Lunnainn agus fiùs Prìosan Barlinnie. Tron chuairt seo, bha Ross a’ cur an t-siathamh clàr aige “Trouble Came Looking”, cruinneachadh do dh’òrain a tha a’ riochdachadh droch amannan eaconomach agus cion-airgid, air beulaibh an t-sluaigh.

Tha am film seo air aithris leis an tè-lìbhrigidh ainmeil, Cathy NicDhòmhnaill, ’s i gar toirt air slighe Ross timcheall na dùthcha leis an neach-ciùil Gregor Philip agus le manaidsear Ross, Tom O’Rourke. Bha Ross fhèin airson a’ chuairt seo a chumail sìmplidh, ’s e ag ràdh nach robh e ach airson: “to turn up in a car or something in a place, with a piano set up and a PA and we would just turn up and just play some songs.” Tha am film seo ga shealltainn ’s e ag ullachadh airson na cuirmean aige air àrd-ùrlar agus tha agallamhan beaga na mheasg cuideachd, ’s e a’ bruidhinn air a bhith a’ sgrìobhadh òrain agus air na faireachdainnean làidir a th’aige air ceartas sòisealta.

Shiubhail Ricky fad agus farsaing sa Ghiblean agus sa Chèitean airson a’ chuairt seo, ‘Untold Stories’. Am measg nan àitichean iomallach air an do thadhail e bha Steòrnabhagh, Ullapul agus Arcaibh – eadar-dhealachadh mòr bho phrìomh-bhaile Lunnainn agus crìochan Barlinnie. Roghnaich e seinn aig a’ phrìosan aithnichte seo air sgàth a chreideamh agus cumhachd an t-sàbhalaidh, thuirt e: “Religious faith, for me, has always been something which has led towards social justice… very often things turn around. Things change. People change, Amazing things do happen.”

Dh’fhosgail Ricky gach cuirm den chuairt seo leis an òran “Trouble Came Looking For Me”. Bha an t-òran seo gu h-àraidh iomchaidh nuair a chaidh a sheinn air beulaibh luchd-èisteachd a’ phrìosain. Tha seo fhèin a’ soilleireachadh an ceangail làidir a bhitheas Ricky a’ dèanamh le gach luchd-èisteachd ris am bi e a’ seinn.

Chaidh a’ mhòr chuid den fhilm a chlàradh bho shuidheachadh taigh-cluiche Gardyne ann an Dùn Dè, am baile anns an do thogadh Ricky fhèin. Mhìnich e cho cudromach ’s a bha an togalach seo dha, thoradh ’s gum b’ ann an sin a chluich e a’ chiad chuirm aige. Bha an luchd-leantail air an cuairteachadh le dreachan do dh’òrain ainmeil le Deacon Blue agus òrain ùr cuideachd. ’S ann sa chuirm seo an Dùn Dè a chaidh cliù Ricky mar sheanchaidh cuideachd a shoilleireachadh, ’s e ag innse ’s a’ mìneachadh sgeul gach òran mus do ghabh e iad.

Ged a tha an tàlant seo aig Ricky Ross ann am pailteas, mar a mhìnich e, bha fhathast teagamh ann fhèin ron chuairt seo, ’s e ag ràdh: “I've had experience before of just doing solo shows and - this may sound really odd - and I've said, "I'm not sure if I've got the constitution to do it.” Aig a’ cheart àm ge-tà, mhothaich Ross bho chionn fhada gun robh feum aig a’ ghnìomhachais aige air fòcas agus àrd-amas, ’s e ag ràdh: “If you don’t have some bit of you that actually believes that you can actually succeed, then there’s no point in doing it.”
