BBC ALBA TRIES TO TRANSFORM PETULANT POOCHES INTO HEAVENLY HOUNDS

A dog is man’s best friend. So the saying goes, but whoever coined the phrase obviously hadn’t met Donald MacSween and his boisterous Border Collie, Bud.

TV presenter Donald along with Bud join 10 other owners and their dogs for a new series on BBC ALBA, all with one thing in common – the ambition to have a well-trained dog.

Throughout the series, ‘Sgoil nan Cuileanan’: ‘Where Obedient Dogs Rule’, Donald follows the progress over eight training classes where both owners and their dogs have a number of commands to learn in order to achieve their goal - starting with the basics including sit, down and stand, right through to agility work including hurdles, see-saw and weave poles.

To help them on their way they have their very own dog trainer and self-confessed dog addict, Christina MacAulay from Uist, who firmly believes that dogs are better than humans…..“they are, aren’t they?!” Christina and her trusty Labrador, Wallace, show how, step by step, the very best in our four-legged friends can be brought out.

Julie MacDonald, who runs her own dog training school and is a qualified dog behaviourist , is the Puppy School’s resident dog expert and is also on hand to offer help and advice. Each programme in the series sees Julie visit a different dog and their owner to help solve their doggie dilemmas. Known for her ‘no messing’ attitude, Julie is here to help transform petulant pooches into heavenly hounds.

In the first episode of the series, we meet all 10 dogs and their owners and discover why they've signed up to Sgoil nan Cuileanan. Julie visits class members Ann-Marie McGregor, from Muir of Ord, and her dog Breagha, an Irish Wheaten Terrier, to give them some helpful advice on toilet training.

Coming up in future programmes:

  • • programme 2 - Micky Jones’ (North Kessock) Jack Russell, Cluanie is a small dog with a big voice – can Julie help Micky control Cluanie’s barking?
  • • programme 3 - Alfie, the Cocker Spaniel is petrified of getting into the car - Julie tries to help Sandra Sutherland (Inverness) and Alfie get over his fear.
  • • programme 4 - Australian Kelpie, Indie is a friendly little dog with lots of energy but she can sometimes be a little too lively for owner, Ann Irvine (Inverness).
  • • programme 5 – Daisy and Kara are a couple of jealous Jack Russells in need of some social skills. Julie visits owner Mo MacKay (Dingwall) in the hope she can make all their lives a little easier.
  • • programme 6 – Olly is a friendly King Charles Spaniel but he’s picked up some naughty habits. Can Julie help owner Val Proudfoot (Inverness) curb them?
  • • programme 7 – Malamute, Xsan gets a little anxious when meeting new dogs but Julie has advice for his owner Julie MacLean (Inverness) to help increase his confidence.
  • • programme 8 – BJ the Border Collie’s fear of traffic makes life very difficult for his owner Shirley McCurry (Inverness) so can Julie help resolve the matter?

The series culminates in a grand finale in programme nine, where the class puts all that they’ve learnt over the eight classes to the test, as they battle it out over an agility course to win the Sgoil nan Cuileanan Championship.

‘Sgoil nan Cuileanan’: ‘Where Obedient Dogs Rule’ was produced by Charlene MacLeod and Terry Wolsey of Eyeline Media and directed by Michael Hines. The series starts on BBC ALBA on Monday 1st April at 8.30pm and each consecutive Monday thereafter.

SGOIL NAN CUILEANAN

’S e cù an caraid as fheàrr aig mac an duine. Uill, ’s e sin a bhios iad ag ràdh cò dhiù, ach tha e follaiseach nach do choinnich iad ri Dòmhnall MacSuain agus an cù chaorach sunndach aige, Bud!

’S e sreath ùr dha BBC ALBA a th’ ann an Sgoil nan Cuileanan far a bheil Dòmhnall agus Bud a’ coinneachadh ri 10 maighstirean eile agus an cuid coin, is iad uile a’ sireadh an aon rud – cù a th’ air a dheagh thrèanadh.

Tha an sreath gan leantainn ’s iad a’ gabhail pàirt ann an 8 clasaichean trèanaidh far am bi riaghailtean aca ri ionnsachadh gus an ceann uidhe a ruighinn. A’ tòiseachadh le na rudan bunaiteach – Suidh’, Sìos, Seas – agus a’ gluasad gu lùth-chleasachd le Cnapan-starra, Iobalag-obalag agus Snìomh eadar phòlaichean.

Airson an cuideachadh tha neach-trèanaidh choin aca dhaibh fhèin, Christina NicAmhlaigh, a tha den bheachd gu bheil coin nas fheàrr na daoine “’s iad a tha, nach iad?” Bidh Christina agus Wallace, an Labrador aice, a’ sealltainn dhuinn an dòigh as fheàrr, mean air mhean, dol a-mach na coin againn a’ cheannsachadh.

’S i Julie Dhòmhnallach eòlaiche Sgoil nan Cuileanan agus bidh ise a’ toirt seachad cuideachadh is comhairle. Gach seachdain bidh Julie a’ tadhal air daoine aig a bheil coin le duilgheadasan sònraichte. Cha bhi i a’ gabhail ri leisgeulan idir, is i a’ dearbhadh dhuinn gun urrainn dha na coin a bhith modhail, uill ’s e sin an t-amas cò dhiù...

Bidh an sreath a’ crìochnachadh le dùbhlan crìochnachaidh, far am bi deuchainn aig a’ chlas mu na tha iad air ionnsachadh thairis air na h-ochd seachdainean agus iad a’ strì airson tiotal ‘Neach-Buannachaidh’ Sgoil nan Cuileanan. Furasta gu leòr, ach a bheil iad deònach is comasach an obair a dhèanamh?

Coimheadaibh air Sgoil nan Cuileanan – a’ tòiseachadh Diluain, 1mh Giblean aig 8:30f air BBC ALBA – gus am faigh sibh a-mach!

Sgoil nan Cuileanan - far a bheil coin dòigheil is air an deagh thrèanadh!
