BBC ALBA OFFERS A POIGNANT INSIGHT INTO LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

Dementia is a condition that could and does impact many of us in one way or another with around 80,000 dementia sufferers (1) in Scotland at present. This number is expected to double over the next 20 years (2) due to the country’s ageing population and it is predicted that one in three people over 65 will die of the condition (3).

While it’s most common in older people, dementia has many forms and can also affect people in their 40s or 50s, or even younger. Unfortunately it is a disease that is progressive so the symptoms will gradually get worse, with no current cure.

A moving programme on BBC ALBA ‘Trusadh: Living with Dementia: Seargadh-Inntinn’ offers an insight into the realities for those living with this debilitating condition, meeting people who have dementia as well as the devoted carers who help to make their lives easier.

BBC ALBA meets ninety year old dementia sufferer, Katie Fraser who lives with her daughter Ishbel in Breakish in Skye. “It’s now payback time for me for when I was young”, says Ishbel. “It’s not a chore for me. It’s a labour of love like she’d say herself.”

There are over 1000 care homes throughout Scotland with 64 percent of residents suffering from dementia. In Inverness, the programme follows some of the team who run a care home offering specialist dementia care.

Manager, Kathleen McGough said: “What we try to do is give the best possible care – physical care, social, emotional. We’re also very conscious of supporting the families because it’s a very very difficult thing for the families.”

We also hear from Agness Houston from Coatbridge, a member of the Scottish Dementia Working Group, who was diagnosed with the condition in 2006. Agness visits new member, Marion Hamilton who was recently diagnosed with dementia at only 49 years of age. The campaign group works to improve attitudes towards people with dementia.

Trusadh: Living with Dementia: Seargadh-Inntinn has been produced for BBC ALBA by MacTV and will be transmitted on Monday 25 February at 9.00pm.

Sùil air co ris a tha e coltach a bhith beò le seargadh-inntinn

Tha mu 80,000 neach a’ fulang le seargadh-inntinn ann an Alba. Le dùil gun dùblaich an àireamh sin thar an ath 20 bliadhna, is sluagh na h-Alba a’ sìor fhàs nas sine, bheir seargadh-inntinn buaidh oirnn uile ann an dòigh air choireigin. Ged a tha e nas cumanta ann an daoine nas sine, tha e cuideachd a’ toirt buaidh air daoine nan 40an agus nan 50an, agus fiù ’s nas òige.

Tha Katie Fhriseil a tha 90 bliadhna a dh’aois a’ fulang le seargadh-inntinn ’s a’ fuireach còmhla ri a nighinn, Iseabail ann am Breacais san Eilean Sgitheanach. Leanaidh sinn cuid den sgioba a tha a’ ruith Cameron House ann an Inbhir Nis, taigh-cùram a tha coisrigte ann an cùram seargadh-inntinne.

Coinnichidh sinn cuideachd ri Agnes Houston a tha na ball den Scottish Dementia Working Group,’s i a’ tadhal air ball ùr, Marion Hamilton. Chaidh dèanamh a-mach gun robh seargadh-inntinn air Marion bho chionn ghoirid ’s gun i ach 49.

Tha an sreath phrògraman Trusadh air a riochdachadh le macTV airson BBC ALBA. Chithear Trusadh: Seargadh-inntinn air BBC ALBA air Diluain 25 Gearran le ath-chraoladh air Dimàirt 26 Gearran aig 10f.
