TWO SORDID EDINBURGH MURDERS RETOLD ON BBC ALBA

Two of Edinburgh’s most sordid historic murder stories will be retold in two new unique drama-documentaries to be broadcast on BBC ALBA.

The compelling drama reconstructions with expert opinion offer an insight into the lives of two murderers who both killed family members and each denied their involvement to the end, ultimately resulting in their own deaths.

Both programmes have been produced by Jackie Maclean of STV Productions for BBC ALBA and are being presented by John Morrison.

All That Lies Behind Me – Sgeulachd Donald Merrett

Thursday 15 May, 9.00 – 10.00pm

Sgeulachd Donald Merrett - 'Old Merrett' holding a gun (played by actor Robert Yates)

Born in New Zealand in 1908, Merrett moved with his mother Bertha to Edinburgh in 1926 when his parents separated after WW1. With a high I.Q. and a rare gift for languages, 'young Donnie' was ear-marked for Oxford however, by the age of 17 he had acquired a motorbike, a pistol, a fondness for drink – and a sizeable overdraft. On the morning of 17th March 1926, the Merretts were breakfasting together when the servant heard a gun-shot. In the dining room, she found 55-year-old Bertha lying bleeding from a head wound with her son insisting she had shot herself. A bungled police investigation meant that at first, Donald’s version of events was accepted however, it gradually came to light that Merrett had been defrauding his mother by forging her cheques to pay for his extravagance and was later arrested. The trial in early 1927 caused a sensation in Britain, with Donald being charged with matricide. He was skilfully defended however, and the jury returned the controversial Scots verdict of ‘not proven’. Merrett received just a year's imprisonment for the forgery.

After Bertha died and on his release from prison, Donald married 17 year old Vera Bonnar and went on a thirty year spree across Europe. He spent a large inheritance, consorted with countless women and became estranged from Vera. He traded on the black market during WWII and returned to Britain in 1954 under disguise in his 40s, intent on procuring money from his estranged wife. When Vera refused to give him cash, he drowned her in the bath and when her mother tried to intervene, Merrett showed no mercy.

Donald Merrett was one of the most colourful and daring criminals of his day from his crimes as a teenager in Edinburgh to his demise when he shot himself whilst wandering penniless in a forest in Germany.

Of Diabolical Purpose - Sgeulachd Monsieur Chantrelle

Thursday 22 May, 9.00 – 10.00pm

Sgeulachd Monsieur Chantrelle Madame Chantrelle ill in bed (played by actress Lynn McCallum) with maid (played by actress Arlene Wood) and Eugene Marie Chantelle (played by actor Russell Murray)

The story of Eugene Chantrelle has been largely forgotten in the archives of Edinburgh crime but remains one of the most remarkable in Scottish criminal history. A French man in exile, Chantrelle had a shady past and displayed bizarre behaviour from his early days in Edinburgh following the 1848 Revolution in France. He studied medicine and was a gifted linguist and teacher, who went on to marry one of his young pupils, 15 year old Elizabeth Dyer. They had four children, but Elizabeth suffered regular verbal and physical abuse at Eugene’s hands. He frequently threatened to poison her saying “........it is in my power to administer a fatal dose that will defy medical detection”. Elizabeth began to feel unwell on New Year’s Day 1878, insisting a gas leak had occurred. On her death two doctors agreed that Elizabeth's symptoms in no way indicated coal gas poisoning. On the day of her funeral Eugene was arrested on suspicion of murder. The case generated enormous public interest and after a five-day trial, he was found unanimously guilty. The hanging of Eugene Chantrelle was the first execution to take place within prison walls in Scotland.

Great grandson of Eugene Chantrelle, Paul Nelson, reflects on the devastating effect the incident had on Chantrelle’s sons, and how this was carried down through the years to his own grandfather, and father.

All That Lies Behind Me – Sgeulachd Donald Merrett

Diardaoin 15 Cèitean, 9.00 – 10.00f

Sgeulachd Donald Merrett - 'Old Merrett' holding a gun (played by actor Robert Yates)

Cùiltear, meàrlach, meall-sgrìobhaiche, a' ceannachd ’s a reic ghunnaichean, agus a' murt triùir. Airson deich bliadhna fichead, bha Donald Merrett ri fòirneart, gu ladarna. Agus an rud as annasaiche, fhuair e às leis.

B’ e an t-aon leanabh a bh' aice agus bha màthair Merrett a-riamh air a mhilleadh. Ach saoil an e murt an taing a thug e dhi? Tha fios againn gur e sin a rinn e ri bhean, ’s a mhàthair-chèile.

Rugadh John Donald Merrett ann an New Zealand ann an 1908. Bha a phàrantan math dheth, ach dhealaich iad às dèidh a' chiad Chogadh agus chan fhaca Merrett òg athair tuilleadh. Ghluais e fhèin ’s a mhàthair Bertha gu Dùn Èideann. Aig aois 17, bha "Donnie" mar a bh' aic' air, a' dèanamh ceum san Oilthigh. Bha comasan air leth aige ann an cànain, ach fhathast òg, thòisich e air òl agus a' ruith bhoireannaich. Bhiodh e frithealadh nan tallaichean dannsa, agus a' cosg tòrr. Mu dheireadh, thòisich e air goid o mhàthair, le bhith a’ cur a h-ainm ri seicichean, gu meallta.

Aon mhadainn ann an 1926, bha Bertha agus a mac aig bracaist còmhla nuair a chuala an t-searbhant urchair. Lorg i Bertha na sìneadh, gunna na dòrn. Thuirt Donald gu robh i air a làmh a chuir na beatha fhèin. Bha am poileas cha mhòr gun fheum, agus chaidh dèiligeadh ri Bertha mar phrìosanach san ospadal, air sgàth ’s gun robh fèin-mharbhadh an uair sin na eucoir. Cha robh dragh air Merrett òg, agus chùm e air a' cosg 's a' cur seachad gach oidhche a-muigh sa bhaile.

Chosg e an seic mu dheireadh goirid mus do bhàsaich a mhàthair. Thug e ùine mus do ghabh na h-ùghdarrasan ùidh na chuid dol-a-mach, ach mu dheireadh chaidh a chur an grèim. Bha dìon làidir aige ge-tà, agus fhuair e às le dìreach aon bhliadhna sa phrìosan airson cùis nan seicichean.

Bha Donald Merrett a-riamh fortanach. Goirid às dèidh dha a bhith air a shaoradh, fhuair e dìleab mòr bho sheanair; luach millean not san là a th' ann. Thòisich e a-rithist air cosg agus a' siubhal. Phòs e tè ann an Glaschu, Vera Bonnar, nighean uaislean.

Dh'atharraich Merrett ainm gu "Ronald Chesney" agus ghluais an càraid deas, gu Portsmouth. Thòisich e ri foill a-rithist, agus a' falbh tric le boireannaich eile. Lean seo thar deich bliadhna fichead. Aig àm an dàrna Cogaidh bha e sa Chabhlach Rìoghail, ach fhathast ghabh e brath air mòran, a' goid agus an sàs sa mhargaidh dhubh.

Cha deach bàs Bertha Merrett ann an Dùn Èideann, a-riamh a rèiteach - ach tha eòlaichean foreansaig a-nise an ìre mhath cinnteach gur e am mac a bu choireach. Agus ged a bha ùine mhòr ann mus do thionndaidh Merrett gu murt a-rithist, b' e fìor sgrios do-chreidsinneach a bh' ann ...

Ann an 1954, agus e air ruith a-mach à airgead, thill Merrett a Bhreatainn far an robh Vera agus am màthair a' cumail dachaigh-cùraim airson seann daoine. Nuair nach toireadh a bhean dha airgead, chuir e às dhi le bhith ga bàthadh san amar. Agus nuair a dh'fheuch a màthair ri stad a chuir air, fhuair ise bàs iargalta ...

Gun sgillinn, agus na h-ùghdarrasan eadar-nàiseanta às a dhèidh, theich Merrett dhan Ghearmailt. B' ann an sin a chaidh a chorp fhèin a lorg, beagan làithean às dèidh mhurt a bhean ’s a màthair. Bha gunna na làimh-san, cuideachd. Goirid roimhe, bha e air sgrìobhadh gu leannan a bh' aige ann an Hamburg, ag ràdh "after all that lies behind me, I have no chance."

Le luchd-lagha, eòlaiche inntinn agus fear-naidheachd uile a’ beachdachadh air, seo an sgeulachd uabhasach aig John Donald Merrett, air a h-innse slàn.

Of Diabolical Purpose - Sgeulachd Monsieur Chantrelle

Sgeulachd Monsieur Chantrelle Madame Chantrelle ill in bed (played by actress Lynn McCallum) with maid (played by actress Arlene Wood) and Eugene Marie Chantelle (played by actor Russell Murray)

Ann an 1868, sguir Breatann a' cur daoine gu bàs gu poblach. Deich bliadhna às dèidh sin, chaidh a' chiad duine ann an Alba a chrochadh air taobh a-staigh ballachan prìosain ann an Dùn Èideann, às dèidh cùis lagh connspaideach. Thug a' chùis a bha seo buaidh uabhasach air teaghlach aig an àm. Agus tha bhuaidh ri fhaicinn chun là an-diugh. Tha sgeulachd aig Eugene Chantrelle, cho annasach ri gin ann an eachdraidh fòirneart ann an Alba.

Murt le puinnsean, fògarrach Frangach agus bàs gu dearbha, nach deach a rèiteach a-riamh. An do chuir Eugene Chantrelle às dha bhean òg? No am b' e tubaist a bh' ann - no làmh chuideigin eile?

Rugadh Eugène Marie Chantrelle ann an Nantes, ann an 1834. Bha athair na mharsanta mara beartach. Fhuair am balach deagh foghlam agus thug e a-mach dotaireachd san oilthigh. Ach chaill an teaghlach an cuid gnìomhachais aig àm ar-a-mach na Frainge ann an 1848. Theich Chantrelle a Pharis, far an robh e a’ sabaid air taobh nan Comannach. Chaidh a leòn, agus nuair a chaidh an strì na aghaidh, dh'fhàg e an Fhraing. Às dèidh ùine a' siubhal, thàinig e a Dhùn Èideann ann an 1866.

Bha iomadh cànan Eòrpach aig Chantrelle agus fhuair e obair a' teagasg gu prìobhaideach. B' ann san dòigh sin a thachair e ri Elizabeth Dyer, nach robh ach 15 bliadhna a dh'aois. Ann an ùine ghoirid bha iad a' falbh le chèile, a dh'aindeoin draghannan a pàrantan. Bha Elizabeth trom aig aois 16, agus phòs an dithis. Bhon chiad là, b' e cùis dòrainneach a bh' ann don bhoireannach òg.

Bha ceathrar leanabh aca, balaich uile, agus taigh mòr ann am meadhan a' bhail’ ùir ann an Dùn Èideann. Ach bhiodh Chantrelle ga dochann, agus a' maoidheadh oirre tric. Thòisich e air òl, agus a' falbh le siùrsaich. Ged a bha a' chlann air an coimhead às an dèidh, tha fear de shliochd Chantrelle Paul Nelson, a' mìneachadh gu dè seòrsa buaidh a bh' aig dol-a-mach an athar orra, bliadhnaichean mòra às dèidh na cùis.

Le eòlas ann an stuthan meidigeach bho chuid làithean san oilthigh san Fhraing, bhiodh Chantrelle tric ag innse do dh'Elizabeth gu robh comas aigesan a marbhadh le stuthan puinnseanta. An ann mar sin a thachair, aig àm na bliadhn' ùire ann an 1878? Tha am prògram a' dèanamh sgrùdadh.

Dh'fhàs Elizabeth bochd air a' chiad là den bhliadhna. Bha searbhant dhìleas aice a dh'fheuch ri a sàbhaladh, ach bhàsaich i goirid às dèidh dhaibh an dotair a ghairm. Bha Chantrelle a' cumail a-mach gur e aoidion gas a thug bàs dhi. Ach anns a' phrògram, tha an Dotair Sarah Marr a' mìneachadh carson nach biodh sin idir comasach.

Chaidh Chantrelle a chur an grèim às dèidh tiodhlaigeadh a' mhnaoi, agus cha deach a shaoradh a-riamh tuilleadh. Bha chùis-lagh connspaideach, le feadhainn den bheachd gur e gràin-cinnidh an aghaidh nan Frangach an rud a dh’adhbharaich na casaidean. Bha dìon math, làidir aige agus cha robh dearbhadh cruaidh, cinnteach idir aig a' Chrùn. A dh'aindeoin sin, chaidh a lorg ciontach - fo chasaid gun do mhurt e a bhean le bhith a’ cur opium na biadh. Mar a thuirt am britheamh, cha robh fainear do Eugene Chantrelle ach 'diabolical purpose.'

B' e crochadh Chantrelle a' chiad fhear a rinneadh air cùlaibh bhallachan prìosain ann an Alba. Goirid às a dhèidh, chaidh na mic òga aige an toirt air falbh à Dùn Èideann. Tha iar-ogha Chantrelle, Paul Nelson ag innse mar a thachair sna bliadhnaichean às dèidh sin, le droch bhuaidh gu math follaiseach nam beatha uile, fiùs a' bualadh air athair fhèin a chaidh a thogail ann an Glaschu.

Cuimhneachain pearsanta, beachdan bho eòlaichean, agus ìomhaighean làidir dràma uile air an snìomh còmhla.
