WELCOME THE COMMONWEALTH WITH AN ECLETIC CÈILIDH ON BBC ALBA

As Glasgow prepares to welcome visitors from across the globe, BBC ALBA are inviting viewers across the country to celebrate the beginning of the Commonwealth Games with an evening of world class folk music from BBC at the Quay.

Presented by Bruce MacGregor and Kirsteen MacDonald, Cèilidh a’ Cho-Fhlaitheis / Commonwealth Cèilidh will provide a traditional Scottish welcome to guests from far and wide.

The cèilidh concert will be broadcast live on both BBC Radio Scotland and Radio nan Gàidheal on Thursday 24th July, with BBC ALBA providing television coverage on Saturday 26th July.

Scots and Gaelic language performers will be at the fore, with the acclaimed Karen Matheson and Donald Shaw of Capercaillie leading an eclectic and talented line-up.

Siobhan Miller, who is scheduled to release her debut album this year and has twice been named Scots Singer of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards, will take to the stage to perform as will young Gaelic singer Linda MacLeod, who specialises in songs from her native North Uist.

Orcadian folk musician and songwriter Kris Drever, whose latest album alongside Éamonn Coyne – Storymap – was released last year, will entertain audiences and the concert will also enjoy a performance from a band often described as the Gaelic supergroup, five piece outfit, Dàimh.

Finally, an international flavour to the cèilidh will be provided by James Fagan and Jamie McClennan who perform together as The James Brothers. Originally hailing from Australia and New Zealand, the duo will provide their own unique brand of folk, blues and bluegrass.

The event at The Quay in Glasgow is now fully booked but listeners and viewers can enjoy the atmosphere and music across radio and television.

Live radio coverage of the Commonwealth Cèilidh will be provided by BBC Radio Scotland and Radio nan Gàidheal on Thursday 24th July from 8.00pm until 10.00pm.

Television coverage of the concert will be screened on BBC ALBA on Saturday 26th July at 9.00pm until 11.00pm.
