Lynsey Sharp - Commonwealth Games

BBC ALBA SHARE THE STORIES OF THOSE WHO MADE THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES HAPPEN

With 2014 drawing to a close, it is unlikely that other years will be recognised as memorably and as significantly as that experienced by Scotland over the last 12 months.

Just one of the events that made 2014 such an extraordinary year for the nation was the Commonwealth Games held during the summer in Glasgow.

A new BBC ALBA documentary showcases the stories of the people who made the Games happen and their tales that ensure that 2014 was a year they will never forget.

The Games were the biggest multi-sport event Scotland had ever seen and the unique spirit of this iconic event was created in no small part by the efforts of the many volunteers, competitors, workers and baton bearers as they all enjoyed the experience of a lifetime.

Amongst those we meet are some of the baton bearers, including Abbie MacNeil from Glasgow, the current Junior World Highland Dancing Champion. Marion Lynsey Steele also carried the baton in recognition for her work to provide sporting facilities for young and old across Uist.

Glasgow 2014 was a massive logistical operation and we speak to two of the team who strove to ensure everything went to plan, Eilidh Laing and Jamie Wallace. Key to the Games’ success was also the 15,000 volunteers who were selected from throughout the country – the Clydesiders. We follow Murdo ‘Cloudy’ MacLeod from Lewis whose infectious smile ensured a cheery welcome for everyone.

Of course at the heart of the games was sport – and we followed one of Scotland’s top medal prospects through her own Games journey... and what a journey that was for 800m medal hope Lynsey Sharp!

Trusadh: The Commonwealth Games, produced by MacTV for BBC ALBA, will be shown on Monday 22 December 9.00 from 10.00pm.

Lynsey Sharp - Commonwealth Games

As t-Samhradh 2014 bha baile Ghlaschu aig teas meadhain Geamaichean a’ Cho-fhlaitheis – an tachartas as motha de dh’iomadh spòrs a-riamh an Alba. Fhuair mòran an cothrom pàirt a ghabhail san tachartas sònraichte seo, agus lean sinne cuid dhiubh – obraichean saor-thoileach, farpaisich, luchd-obrach agus luchd-giùlain a’ bhatain, air slighe a bha dha-rìribh gun choimeas.

Am measg an fheadhainn a bha a’ giùlain a’ bhatain bha Abbie NicNèill à Glaschu, a bhuannaich Farpais Dannsa Gàidhealach na Cruinne airson òigridh; agus Marion Lynsey Steele a tha air obair mhòr a dhèanamh son goireasan spòrs a stèidheachadh dha sean is òg ann an Uibhist.

Bha Glaschu 2014 na thachartas aig meud air leth mòr, agus bha na mìltean ag obair ann. Nam measg bha Eilidh Laing agus Seumaidh Uallas, a’ feuchainn ri freagairtean a lorg do gach dùbhlan mar a nochdadh e. Ach aig cridhe a’ chùis bha 15,000 neach a bha ag obair gu saor-thoileach, ’s a thàinig bho air feadh na dùthcha – na Clydesiders. B’ e Murdo ‘Cloudy’ MacLeòid à Leòdhas aonan dhiubh agus e a’ cur fàilte chridheil air a h-uile duine le gàire mhòr!

Ach dè mu dheidhinn an spòrs fhèin? Lean sinn aon den lùth-chleasaichean ris an robh dùil a dhèanadh math agus a thogadh bonn agus abair gur e turas iongantach dha-rìribh a bh’ ann dha Lynsey Sharp!
