A FEAST OF LIVE FOOTBALL ON BBC ALBA WITH RAITH ROVERS V QUEEN OF THE SOUTH AND LIVINGSTON V STRANRAER

BBC ALBA’s live Scottish football coverage continues this weekend with action from the Championship clash between Raith Rovers and Queen of the South and coverage of the Petrofac Training Cup semi-final as Livingston face Stranraer.

Live action from Raith Rovers v Queen of the South starts on Friday at 7.25pm, with Calum Macaulay presenting the match and commentary from Alex O’Henley.

Home side Raith currently sit third in the standings, with Queens just one place and three points behind the Kirkcaldy outfit.

Friday’s encounter will be their first clash of the season after four meetings during last season’s campaign. Raith won their first two fixtures before Queen of the South recorded a 1-0 win in their third meeting in January. April saw their most recent encounter with Rovers triumphing 3-2 thanks to goals from Joe Cardle, Paul Watson and John Baird. Mark Durnan notched both goals for the Dumfries side.

As well as the live action, at half-time we hear from Raith Rovers striker Christian Nade who has settled into life with the club and in a bid to achieve optimum fitness, has changed his diet and made inroads to achieving his goal. He reveals how he is enjoying life at Rovers, and explains that the trust of his manager Grant Murray has made his spell at Starks Park the happiest of his career to date.

At Queen of the South, new manager James Fowler talks about replacing Jim McIntyre in the Palmerston hot seat, his ambitions for the club in a highly competitive league, and the reasons behind the growing number of young managers in the Scottish game.

In the second live match of the weekend, Livingston and Stranraer do battle for a place in the final of the Petrofac Training Cup.

Coverage starts at 4.00pm and the match will once again be presented by Calum Macaulay. Derek MacKay will provide commentary with analysis from former Stranraer defender David Farrell.

With a final against either East Fife or Rangers for the winners to look forward to, both sides will be anxious to secure a victory in their quest for silverware. Home side Livi have never won the Challenge Cup, with a runners-up spot to Airdrieonians in the 2000/2001 season their closest achievement.

Stranraer, however, will be aiming to book their place in the final and repeat their success of the 1996/1997 season when they defeated St Johnstone 1-0 at Broadwood to lift the cup for the only time in their history.

With Livingston a league above Stranraer there are not too many recent meetings between the sides but the Stair Park side will hope to avoid a repeat of their last encounter with the West Lothian outfit which ended in an 8-0 home loss in the League Cup in the 2012/2013 season.

As well as the live action, we take a trip to Sheffield United to catch up with former Livi players Marc McNulty and Stefan Scougall and their manager Nigel Clough. We catch up on their progress after Clough signed both players for the Bramall Lane club after expressing his interest in the Scottish transfer market.

We also catch up with Stranraer manager Stephen Aitken as he looks to build upon the success of last season’s third place finish. The 38 year old has been receiving interest from other clubs due to his achievements with the Stair Park side and captain Frank McKeown and new signing Willie Gibson talk about their enjoyment of playing under the young manager.

Live Scottish football is produced for the channel by mneTV, with BBC ALBA providing a premier sports package that also covers action from the Scotland women’s national team, live shinty as well as live PRO12 league rugby.

BBC ALBA is a partnership service between MG ALBA and BBC Scotland to deliver high quality, distinctive home-produced programming.
