BBC ALBA RECALLS THE FALL OF ONE SOLDIER, AND THE EFFECT OF WWI ON HEBRIDEAN COMMUNITIES

Simon MacQuarrie at his Grandfathers grave

A little over 100 years after the death of a Scottish soldier, Gillean Grinn explores the effects that World War One had on a Hebridean community.

Carved in Portland stone, an inscription in a Belgian graveyard reveals little about the death of a Highland soldier: 'MACQUARRIE, Private, SIMON 3/3355. 1st Bn Cameron Highlanders. Died of wounds 26th October 1914.'

Amongst the first of 149 North Uist men lost in action in the Great War, Simon MacQuarrie was interred in a small garden cemetery in Poperinge, Belgium, a scant 20 kilometers from where he was fatally injured near Ypres.

The celebrated poet, Dòmhnall Ruadh Chorùna – a childhood friend of MacQuarrie's who served with him in the 1st Bn Cameron Highlanders – composed the Gaelic elegy to the fallen, "Dh’fhalbh na Gillean Grinn," a harrowing account of their part in what is now known as the First Battle of Ypres.

Gillean Grinn examines how Hebridean communities suffered for decades afterwards. Beyond the collective grief for 149 of the island's menfolk, there was the hidden effect of the return of surviving servicemen who were broken, both physically and mentally.

Poperinge Cemetery

Simon MacQuarrie's story is the catalyst for how war affected and shaped North Uist and serves as an access point to a wider story. Members of the North Uist community provide analysis of the long shadow cast by WWI with contributions from notable war historians Sir Hew Strachan, Dominiek Dendooven and Trevor Royle.

Produced by Bees Nees Media for BBC ALBA, Gillean Grinn will be broadcast on Tuesday 11 November at 9.00pm (and will be repeated on Sunday 16 November at 9.00pm). It will also be available to view on BBC iPlayer.

Simon MacQuarrie at his Grandfathers grave

Beagan ’s ceud bliadhna às dèidh bàs saighdeir Albannach, tha Gillean Grinn a’ soilleireachadh a’ bhuaidh a bh’ aig a’ Chiad Chogadh air coimhearsnachd dhlùth tìr an eòrna.

Air clach-uaghach ann an cladh sa Bheilg, chan eil ach iomradh air bàs an t-saighdear Ghàidhealaich: ‘MacGuaire, Saighdear, Sìm 3/3355. A’ chiad bhatàillean ann an rèiseamaid nan Camshronach. Bhàsaich bho leòntan-cogaidh, 26mh Dàmhair 1914’.

Am measg na 149 saighdear à Uibhist a Tuath a chaidh a mharbhadh sa Chiad Chogadh, bha Sìm MacGuaire. Goirid às dèidh seo chaidh a chuir gu tàmh ann an cladh beag ann an Poperinge sa Bheilg, cha mhòr 20km air falbh bhon dearbh àite san deach a dhroch leòn faisg air Ypres.

Poperinge Cemetery

Bha am bàrd ainmeil, Dòmhnall Ruadh Chorùna, na dheagh charaid do MhacGuaire na òige, ’s bha e cuideachd còmhla ris ann an rèiseamaid nan Camshronach. Rinn Dòmhnall Ruadh marbhrann son na gillean a chaidh am marbhadh sa chogadh bhrùideil seo. San òran cumhachdach, ‘Dh’fhalbh na Gillean Grinn’, thug e cunntas air na dleastanasan agus na seallaidhean uabhasach a bha ro gach saighdear sa chiad bhlàr seo ann an Ypres.

Tha am prògram Gillean Grinn a’ soilleireachadh mar a dh’fhuiling coimhearsnachdan nan eilean son bliadhnaichean ’s deicheadan às dèidh crìoch a’ Chiad Chogaidh. A bharrachd air a bhith a’ caoidh na 149 saighdear nach do thill dhachaigh thuca, bha na saighdearan a bha fortanach tilleadh dhachaigh lem beatha fhathast briste brònach, an dà chuid nam bodhaig agus nan inntinn.

Tha stòiridh Sìm MhicGuaire na chiad shealladh air a’ bhuaidh a bh’ aig a’ chogadh air Uibhist a Tuath agus às an sin tha an stòiridh a’ leudachadh. Sa phrògram, tha cuid do mhuinntir Uibhist a Tuath a’ meòrachadh air buaidh mhaireannach a’ Chiad Chogaidh agus thathar a’ cluinntinn bho luchd-eachdraidh cogaidh ainmeil; ’s iad sin An Ridire Hew Strachan, Dominiek Dendooven agus Trevor Royle.

Tha Gillean Grinn air a riochdachadh le Bees Nees Media. Thèid Gillean Grinn a chraoladh air BBC ALBA air Dimàirt 11mh dhen t-Samhain.
