Nationwide an Alba: An Taobh An Ear

BBC ALBA - Dihaoine 10 Màrt aig 9.00f

Aviemore

Fascinating stories of years gone by will be rebroadcast in a new BBC ALBA series using footage from the popular series Nationwide which was the BBC’s long-running news and current affairs show transmitted on BBC One from 1969 to 1983.

Nationwide was a magazine show with a remit to cover regional stories throughout the whole of the United Kingdom and BBC ALBA is offering viewers the opportunity to see some of the best of Nationwide’s Scottish content over a three week period with a selection of stories from the west, east and the islands of Scotland.

Programme two in the three part series, Nationwide an Alba: An Taobh An Ear / East, will take a look at the most compelling stories of that time from the east of Scotland, many of which have only been seen once before, presented by BBC News journalist Alasdair Fraser.

Highlights include a report from 1977 that takes a look at the work of the Nimrods in patrolling Britain's fishing limits, Londoners in 1970 making their way to Aviemore for a weekend of skiing and a Glasgow-based crane driver who in 1976 resigned to become a shepherd in the Scottish Borders.

Regional stories include:

Highlands and Morayshire:
• A special report from RAF Kinloss in 1977 takes a look at the duties carried out by the Nimrods in patrolling Britain's new 200 mile fishing limits including interviews with a navigator who describes technical detail of plotting contacts made on charts for relaying to the Ministry whilst the captain explains how their surveillance techniques are contributing to the prevention of illegal fishing within the limits.
• Life in 1974 in Sutherland - the local school is a converted bunkhouse and within the report we hear from the father of two local pupils who is a gatekeeper on the estates in Sutherland. He believes his children do not have enough interaction with other children their own age and neither have been to a cinema.
• 1973 report comes from Suisgill estate in Kildonan after the discovery of real gold nuggets found in Kildonan, Sutherland in the Highlands. Gamekeeper Donald Mackay talks about gold prospecting and speaks of his technique panning for gold however, a local council survey will confirm gold but not in commercial quantities.

• Local estate agents report on the land and property speculators at work in 1974 as a result of the North Sea oil boom where plots of land in Caithness are estimated to increase significantly due to the oil boom and uranium mining however there is no prospect of oil or mineral development in Caithness.
• A pair of ospreys are about to arrive in the Highlands of Scotland, on the shores of Loch Garten in 1974. Ospreys are large beautiful birds that spend the winter in North Africa and summer in the Cairngorms where they come to nest and breed. The tree they are nested in will be closely guarded to stop egg thieves from stealing the eggs. We also hear from a man who was convicted of stealing Osprey eggs in 1971.

Perthshire:
• In 1974 Kinross is host to the National Diddling Championships (diddling being a form of singing without words or music) where queues of people wait patiently outside the town hall to take part whilst a street piper and ceilidh bands entertain the crowds.
• A report from Perthshire on the 10th Duke of Atholl takes a look at the increase in popularity of deer stalking in 1976 and highlights the need to work hard to keep estates going in order to support the industry and tourism it generated for Scotland.

Fife:
• From Glenrothes in Fife, the local amateur fire brigade of 1974 talks about their responsibilities that lie in the small airfield nearby, but have not tackled a real fire in ten years. Undaunted by this lack of activity, the firemen keep in trim by training and maintaining their pre-war, crank start fire engine.

Produced by BBC Gàidhlig, Nationwide an Alba will continue on Friday 14 March from 9.00 until 10.00pm with the final programme in the three part series being broadcast on Friday 21 March.

Chan fhacas mòran de na h-aithrisean ach an aon uair agus anns an t-sreath ùr seo, tha Alasdair Friseal a’ taghadh cuid de na sgeulachdan as inntinniche agus is dòcha as annasaiche a chunnacas bho air feadh Alba air Nationwide.
