BBC ALBA SERIES OFFERS INSIGHT INTO WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME A MINISTER IN THE FREE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND

In a largely secular society where church attendance is on the wane what drives a group of young men, and others in the prime of life, to choose the Christian ministry as a career?

BBC ALBA follows a new intake of students at the Edinburgh Theological Seminary as they grapple with the challenges of Hebrew and Greek combined with developing the pastoral skills to serve 21st century Scotland. For some this means separation from their spouses and families but for all it is the beginning of a new life of service to the church.

In the first programme we meet Innes MacSween, a Glasgow University graduate and originally from Ness, Isle of Lewis. He counts football, music and playing video games amongst his passions. But since the age of 17 he has felt the call of the ministry. After his first degree and a debilitating bout of ill health he is finally about to embark on what he regards as his true vocation.

We also hear from Paul Murray who worked for his father’s construction company in Stornoway before answering the call of the ministry. He is now putting timber lorries and heating pipes behind him for the study of the Pentateuch and Biblical Greek. The move to Edinburgh isn’t easy for Paul as it means temporarily leaving behind his wife Amanda and their baby daughter in Harris where Amanda will continue teaching.

Iain Morrison was, for most of his career, a secondary school teacher in Stornoway before setting on a course for life in the ministry. Married with three grown-up children, entering the ministry has meant having to leave his wife, Carmen, behind in Lewis for the duration of his studying as well as giving up a well-paid job and a comfortable lifestyle.

This is a special time also for Edinburgh Theological Seminary - it’s first year after changing its name from the Free Church College. The Seminary aims to attract students from beyond its traditional Free Church intake but from denominations which hold similar teachings and beliefs to the Free Church. Amongst these is Baptist Church student, Martin Smith, of Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh who offers an insight into his reasons for joining the Seminary.

The series will also follow two more Free Church candidates, Mark Macleod and David Macdonald, both originally from Lewis. They, together with their fellow ministers-to-be will offer a unique insight into what it takes to become a minister in the Free Church of Scotland.

Balaich a’ Bhìobaill has been produced for BBC ALBA by BBC Gaelic and will commence on Tuesday 22 September at 8.30pm and each consecutive Tuesday thereafter.

Ann an sreath ùr, Balaich a’ Bhìobaill, gheibhear sealladh, airson a’ chiad uair, air cò ris tha e coltach a bhith a’ trèanadh airson ministrealachd na h-Eaglaise Saoire. Thairis air bliadhna, tha BBC ALBA air a bhith a’ leantainn oileanaich a tha air ùr-thòiseachadh air ceum diadhachd ann an Seimeanaraidh Diadhachd Dhùn Èideann. Romhpa bidh trì bliadhna de leabhraichean, aistean, searmonachadh agus deuchainnean – agus beagan spòrs agus fealla-dhà cuideachd!

Ach cò iad a tha airson a’ bheatha shònraichte seo a leantainn agus carson?

Buinidh Innes MacSuain do sgìre Nis, Eilean Leòdhais, agus tha e measail air ball-coise, geamannan bhidio agus còmhlain ciùil. Chuala e gairm na ministrealachd an toiseach nuair a bha e seachd bliadhn’ deug agus, às dèidh a’ chiad cheum aige an Oilthigh Ghlaschu, agus a bhith a’ fulang le tinneas, tha e mu dheireadh a’ faighinn an cothrom am miann sin a leantainn.

Bha Pòl Moireach ag obair dha companaidh togail athar ann an Steòrnabhagh mus do fhreagair esan gairm na ministrealachd. A-nis tha e a’ cur làraidhean agus pìoban plumaireachd air a chùlaibh airson greimeachadh ris a’ Phentateuch agus seann Ghreugais. Tha an gluasad gu Dùn Èideann a’ ciallachadh cuideachd sgaradh, airson bliadhna, bho bhean, Amanda, agus an nighean bheag aca agus i a’ leantainn oirre a’ teagasg anns na Hearadh. Ciamar a ghabhas Pòl ri beatha an oileanaich a-rithist?

Chuir Iain Moireasdan seachad iomadach bliadhna a’ teagasg san àrd-sgoil ann an Steòrnabhagh mas do chuir e aghaidh ri beatha sa mhinistrealachd. Pòsta, le triùir chloinne air èirigh suas, cha b’ e co-dhùnadh furasta a bha seo dha is teagamhan aig a bhean, Carmen, mu bhith na ‘bean ministear’ agus bhiodh e a’ ciallachadh gum bhiodh iad air falbh bho chèile fad nan trì bliadhnaichean aige san t-seimeanaraidh. An dèan Iain an gnothach air a shon fhèin fada bhon dachaigh agus ciamar a ghabhas e ri a bhith a’ sgrìobhadh aistean a-rithist seach a bhith gan toirt seachad?

‘S e bliadhna shònraichte tha seo cuideachd don t-Seimeanaraidh agus i anns a’ chiad bhliadhna aice bho chaidh a h-ainm atharrachadh bho Cholaiste na h-Eaglaise Saoire. Tha an t-Seimeanaraidh ag amas air oileanaich a tharraing gu diofar chùrsaichean bho eaglaisean ath-leasaichte eile a bharrachd air an Eaglais Shaoir. Am measg iad seo tha Màrtainn Mac a’ Ghobhainn à Manchester bhon Eaglais Bhaisteach. Ciamar a fhreagras teagaisg na h-Eaglaise Saoire airesan?

Leanaidh BBC ALBA iad seo agus dithis eile a bhuineas do Leòdhas, Daibhidh Dòmhnallach agus Mark Macleòid. Cuide riuthasan agus na balaich eile, gheibhear sealladh sònraichte air cò ris tha e coltach a bhi a’ trèanadh airson na ministrealachd ann an Eaglais Shaoir na h-Alba.

Chaidh Balaich a’ Bhìobaill a riochdachadh le BBC Gàidhlig. Balaich a’ Bhìobaill, Dimàirt 22mh an t-Sultain, 20:30, BBC ALBA.
