INTIMATE PORTRAYAL OF THE WORK AND LIFE OF RENOWNED SCOTTISH ARTIST JOLOMO ON BBC ALBA

The work and life of renowned Scottish artist John Lowrie Morrison OBE will be portrayed in a new BBC ALBA documentary titled ‘Jolomo’ which explores not only his art but his faith, where his painting and preaching are inextricably combined.

Jolomo, as he is better known, is arguably Scotland’s most popular artist. His work is instantly recognisable, and his brightly coloured landscapes, often featuring crofts painted at dawn or dusk, can be seen everywhere and his many versions of the Black House on the Strand are hard to miss.

In this intimate one hour documentary ‘Jolomo: Dealbhadair nan Daoine’, John Lowrie Morrison returns to his Harris roots to sketch and photograph with the light and colours of Horgabost on the west coast providing rich inspiration. He visits the croft where his grandfather was born, and while in Tarbert he finds time to preach his distinctive ‘Christianity and art’ message. Jolomo is a committed Christian, his faith drives him and each painting is an affirmation of his belief in God.

John Lowrie Morrison said: “Art is something that comes from somewhere inside you, and whether you believe it’s your spirit or your soul or whatever, art and creativity are coming from inside, and that creativity, that comes from God. I think it is divine, and I think every single person on the planet has got it.

“I love Joan Eardley’s quote that painting is like breathing – I think it’s absolutely lovely. I’ll never step off. I’ll paint – I mean they’ll find me deid at the easel wi’ a brush still in my hand. It’s life, it’s what I do.”

The documentary opens with his London show, ‘Away to the Hebrides’, shedding light on why his work is so popular with the public. Jolomo’s art may not be in the National Galleries collection, but it does appeal to the people, generating large volumes of sales annually, the income from which he uses to support many Scottish charities, including his own, The Jolomo Foundation, which promotes the £35,000 Jolomo Awards for Scottish landscape painting, Scotland’s largest painting Awards.

Those who appreciate his work feel energised by it; they speak of joy and celebration in the colours, textures and composition. His critics, tired, or perhaps unaware, of his visual rhetoric, describe him as a one trick pony. In the eyes of some of the establishment this prolific output devalues his status as a serious artist. Roddy Murray, Director of An Lanntair Gallery in Stornoway, says it’s hard not to perceive Jolomo as a one man factory.

While Director General of the National Galleries, Sir John Leighton, recognizes those risks, he also believes such criticism doesn’t do Jolomo justice. Sir John refers to a ‘sharp technique’ that is ‘resonant, powerful, and highly individual’.

Featuring in the programme, Sir John Leighton, said: “I think people might be surprised at what lies beneath his work, the research, the sketches, the drawings, the knowledge of geography and geology that lies behind his work. I think also, behind what appears to be an almost slapdash style there’s a very sharp technique…something very resonant,....very powerful…something highly individual going on here.”

With contributions from keen collectors of his work, Sir John Leighton, broadcaster Cathy MacDonald and Roddy Murray, this programme provides a platform for diverse views, and poses the key question, might we, one day, see a Jolomo painting purchased for the people, on display in our National Galleries?

Produced by Eyeline Media, Jolomo: Dealbhadair nan Daoine will be broadcast on BBC ALBA on Thursday 29th October at 9pm.

SEALLADH INNTINNEACH AIR OBAIR AGUS BEATHA AN NEACH-EALAIN CHLIÙITICH ALBANNAICH, JOLOMO, AIR BBC ALBA

Bidh beatha agus obair an neach-ealain chliùitich Albannaich, John Lowrie Moireasdan OBE, air a thaisbeanadh ann am prògram aithriseach ùr air BBC Alba air a bheil ‘Jolomo’ agus a bhios a’ toirt sealladh, chan ann a-mhàin air a chuid ealain ach air a chreideamh, far a bheil dlùth cheangal eadar a chuid peantaidh agus a shearmonachadh.

Chanadh cuid gu bheil Jolomo, mar as fheàrr as aithne do dhaoine e, air fear dhen luchd-ealain ann an Alba as measaile air a bheil daoine. Aithnichear a’ chuid obrach anns a’ bhad, agus tha na seallaidhean-tìre dathach aige, gu tric le croitean sa chamhanaich no ciaradh an fheasgair, rim faicinn anns gach àite agus tha duilich gun sealladh fhaighinn dhen iomadh cruth dhen dealbh aige, ‘Taigh-dubh ris an Tràigh’.

Anns a’ phrògram-aithriseach seo, ‘Jolomo: Dealbhadair nan Daoine’, a mhaireas uair a thìde gheibhear dlùth fhiosrachadh air Lowrie Moireasdan ’s e a’ tilleadh gu a fhreumhan anns na Hearadh gus dealbhan a dhèanamh agus a thogail le solas agus dathan Horgaboist air taobh an iar an eilein a’ toirt brosnachadh dha chuid ealain. Tadhlaidh e air a’ chroit far an do rugadh a sheanair, agus fhad ’s a tha e air an Tairbeart tha ùine aige gus searmonachadh mun teachdaireachd aige mu ‘Chrìosdaidheachd agus ealain’. ’S e Crìosdaidh a th’ ann an Jolomo agus tha a chreideamh ga stiùireadh agus tha gach dealbh aige na dearbhadh dhen chreideas aige ann an Dia.

Thuirt John Lowrie Moireasdan: “’S e th’ ann an ealain ach rudeigin a bhios a’ tighinn bho na tha do bhroinn, agus ged a chreideas tu an e do spiorad, no d’ anam no ge brith dè a th’ ann, tha ealain agus tionnsgalachd a’ tighinn bho àiteigin nad bhroinn, agus an tionnsgalachd sin, tha e a’ tighinn bho Dhia. Tha mi a’ smaointinn gu bheil e diadhaidh, agus tha mi a’ smaointinn gu bheil e aig a h-uile duine air an talamh.

“Tha mi air leth measail air na thuirt Joan Eardley gu bheil a bhith a’ peantadh coltach ri bhith a’ gabhail anail – tha mi a’ smaointinn gu bheil sin àlainn. Cha sguir mi a chaoidh. Peantaidh mi – gheibh iad mi ’s mi marbh ach mi nam sheasamh aig an t-sorchan-dealbha le bruis nam làimh. Sin a’ bheatha, sin na bhios mi a’ dèanamh.”

Tha am prògram a’ tòiseachadh aig an taisbeanadh shoirbheachail aige, ‘Away to the Hebrides’ ann an Lunnainn, agus chìthear carson a tha am mòr-shluagh cho measail air a chuid obrach. Mu dh’fhaodte nach eil ealain Jolomo ann an cruinneachadh Gailearaidh Nàiseanta na h-Alba, ach tha e tarraingeach do dhaoine, le àireamh mhòr ga reic gach bliadhna, agus an teachd a-steach a cur ri iomadach carthannas ann an Alba, am fear aige fhèin nam measg sin, Bunait Jolomo, a bhios a’ toirt taic airgid airson na duais as motha ann an Alba airson dealbhan de sheallaidhean-tìre, £35,000, Duais Jolomo.

Tha iadsan a tha measail air a chuid ealain a’ faighinn spionnadh às; bidh iad a’ bruidhinn mun aoibhneas agus an toileachas anns na dathan, san inneach agus na seallaidhean anns na dealbhan fhèin. Tha an fheadhainn a bhios ga chàineadh, iad sgìth no aineòlach air na cleasan dealbhaidh aige, ag ràdh nach eil comas aige ach an aon seòrsa dealbh a dhèanamh. Ann am beachd chuid dhe na h-eòlaichean tha na tha e a dèanamh de dhealbhan a lagachadh a chliù mar neach-ealain tomadach. Tha Ruairidh Moireach, Stiùiriche Gailearaidh An Lanntair ann an Steòrnabhagh, ag ràdh gu bheil e duilich gun a bhith a’ smaointinn air Jolomo mar fhactaraidh ann an dreach aon duine.

Ged a tha Àrd-Stiùiriche nan Gailearaidhean Nàiseanta, Sir John Leighton ag aithneachadh nan cunnartan sin, tha e cuideachd dhen bheachd nach eil Jolomo airidh air leithid sin de chàineadh. Tha Sir John a’ toirt iomradh air an ‘sgil gheur’ aige a tha ‘domhainn, cumhachdach agus na stoidhle dha fhèin a-mhàin’.

A’ gabhail pàirt anns a’ phrògram seo, thuirt Sir John Leighton, Àrd-Stiùiriche Gailearaidhean Nàiseanta na h-Alba: “Tha mi a’ smaointinn gun cuir e iongnadh air cuid na tha air cùlaibh a chuid obrach - an rannsachadh, na dealbhan ullachaidh, am fiosrachadh air cruinn-eòlas agus clach-eòlas. Tha mi a’ smaointinn cuideachd, ged a shaoileadh duine gu bheil stoidhle caran coma co-dhiù aige, gu bheil sgil geur aige...rudeigin a tha dòmhainn...air leth cumhachdach...agus gu bheil stoidhle aige a tha pearsanta dha fhèin a-mhàin.”

Le cuid de luchd-cruinneachaidh a chuid ealain a’ bruidhinn air a’ phrògram, daoine leithid Àrd-Stiùiriche nan Gailearaidhean Nàiseanta, Sir John Leighton, an craoladair Cathy NicDhòmhnaill, agus Stiùiriche An Lanntair, Ruairidh Moireach, tha am prògram seo a’ taisbeanadh farsaingeachd bheachdan, agus a’ cur na prìomh cheist, am faodamaid, aon latha, tè de dhealbhan Jolomo fhaicinn air a ceannach dhan t-sluagh, ’s air a taisbeanadh anns na Gailearaidhean Nàiseanta againn?

Air a riochdachadh le Eyeline Media, bidh Jolomo: Dealbhadair nan Daoine air a chraoladh air BBC ALBA air Diardaoin 29mh dhen Damhair aig 9f.
