The world’s finest orienteering athletes will gather in the Highlands at the end of this month as Scotland hosts the World Orienteering Championships 2015 (WOC2015) and BBC ALBA will exclusively bring the competition live to our screens.

The contests will take place in the Highlands and Moray including Forres, Nairn, Darnaway and Glen Affric from July 31 to August 7, and this year will be the third time that Scotland has hosted the World Orienteering Championships – the previous occasions being in 1976 and 1999.

More than 450 of the world's best orienteering athletes from 50 nations will compete on some of the finest, yet physically and technically demanding orienteering terrain in the UK and BBC ALBA will present live television coverage for an international audience with a package of three programmes from throughout the event:

• Saturday 1 August – 6.00 – 7.25pm – live action covering the mixed sprint relay taking place in Nairn

• Sunday 2 August – 4.45 – 7.10pm – live action as the sprint final takes place in Forres

• Wednesday 5 August – 4.00 – 6.00pm - live action as the relay takes place in Darnaway

The television coverage will be presented by Derek Mackay with expert analysis provided by orienteering coach, and former GBR Orienteering team member, Lorna Eades. Profile features with some of the top athletes participating in the championships will also form part of BBC ALBA’s coverage including interviews with several athletes representing team GB from debutant Charlotte Ward to the experienced Murray Strain, talking about the rise in the sport’s popularity and their own ambitions for the event.

BBC ALBA will also hear from athletes including Ruth Holmes, Kris Jones, Hollie Orr and Hector Haines, as well as from Development and Performance Coach Liz Campbell.

Alan Esslemont, head of content for BBC ALBA, said: “Live sports coverage is a popular genre on our channel and we are extremely excited to be presenting an exclusive package of programmes from the World Orienteering Championships 2015, one of the most prestigious sporting festivals in the world.

“BBC ALBA is a great fit for showcasing this spectacular event live from the Scottish Highlands and bringing the action as it happens to a world-wide audience and helping to generate great exposure through our exclusive television coverage will be a great boost for the sport.”

Paul McGreal, WOC2015 Event Director, said: “WOC2015 is a fantastic chance for us to show orienteering as the exciting, athletic and adventurous sport it really is. BBC ALBA’s great coverage of the event will really help bring the sport alive, and bring it to new audiences. We’re thrilled to be working with BBC ALBA on this project.

“Scotland will host athletes from over 50 nations, and WOC will be one of the biggest sporting events held in the country this year. As a spectacle, it will be impressive, both in the Arenas and live on BBC ALBA.”

The WOC2015 courses will test the sport’s most experienced elite athletes. The long, middle distance and relay races are being staged in the forest and mountain areas of Darnaway and Glen Affric with their rugged hilly ancient Caledonian Forest, semi open terrain and intricate ground features. Nairn and Forres, offering the mixed urban landscape of roads and small alleyways mixed with parkland, ornamental gardens and community woodlands, are the perfect locations for the extremely spectator friendly urban sprint races.

Amongst the athletes competing on home soil will be Hollie Orr and Murray Strain who came out to support BBC ALBA’s television coverage along with BBC ALBA’s WOC2015 presenter Derek Mackay.
