BBC ALBA TAKES A CANDID LOOK AT SCOTLAND’S ONLY ALL MALE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

It’s the word that many of us still avoid. Cancer. But at the heart of one of Scotland’s most traditional communities, something remarkable is happening.

In a small ‘pre-fab’ building in Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis, a one-of-a-kind, all-blokes, group is turning stereotype on its head and opening up about cancer.

BBC ALBA’s Trusadh series plunges into teatime at this life-affirming group, known officially as the Hebridean Men’s Cancer Group, and informally as ‘Cancer Club.’

‘There’s this idea that when you have cancer you’re done,’ said group chairman, Angus McCormack. ‘But our group says absolutely no, that’s not the case at all. We are here. We will give you hope. We exist.’

The programme features poignant first-hand accounts of living through cancer including the story of former Lewis bus-driver and councillor Iain Morrison who shared his final months with the camera.

‘At first I sat there and thought, “why me?”. I felt angry. Then I thought, “Why not me?!’ said Iain.

Iain, who died in July 2015, epitomized the attitude of this one-of-a-kind group, believed to be the first all-male cancer support group in Scotland.

‘People can say what they want about cancer but when someone tells you they have it – that’s when it really hits you….You’ve just got to brush yourself down and carry on…’

Don MacLean, a retired Outdoor Education teacher, has just been made group secretary. He’s busier than he has ever been. But a year ago his life was on the line.

‘I didn’t really want this post as secretary but, sadly, our last secretary died, sadly. But it’s a good laugh. Its good fun.’

The group, which now has over 90 members, has lost three secretaries in the last year.

‘We know that death is around the corner. We aren’t silly about it,’ said Angus McCormack, ‘but we don’t want to dwell on it either, in a kind of negative kind of way…’

Produced for BBC ALBA by mactv, Trusadh - Cancer Club is a moving, and inspiring story of unexpected brotherhood amongst Lewis men.

Mar as trice bidh a’ chuid as motha dhuinn a’ feuchainn ri seachnadh bruidhinn mu dheidhinn aillse, ach aig cridhe aon de na coimhearsnachdan Eileanach tha gluasad iongantach air tachairt.

Ann an togalach beag ann an Steòrnabhagh air eilean Leòdhais, tha buidheann shònraichte de fhir a-mhàin a’ dèanamh rud ris nach biodh tu an dùil idir. Tha iad a’ bruidhinn gu fosgailte – mu aillse.

Ann am Balaich a’ Bruidhinn tha sinn a’ dol nan cuideachd airson strùpag, comhradh agus brosnachadh – ‘s iad Buidheann Taic Aillse nan Innse Gall, no mar as fheàrr a dh’ aithnichear - an ‘Cancer Club.’

“Tha am beachd seo ann gu bheil thu aig deireadh an t-slighe ma tha aillse ort,” thuirt cathraiche na buidhne, Aonghas MacCarmaig. “Ach tha am buidheann a’ cantainn chan eil, chan e sin mar a tha e idir. Tha sinne an seo. Bheir sinn dòchas dhut.”

Tha sgeulachdan bhuapasan air an robh agus a bheil aillse aig cridhe a’ phrògraim, nam measg fear coimhearsnachd air an robh mòran spèis, an comhairliche aithnichte, Iain Moireasdan, no Iain a’ Mhilleachan, a chuir seachad ùine anns na mìosan mu dheireadh na bheatha a’ fiolmadh airson a’ phrògraim.

“Aig an toiseach shuidh mi an sin agus thuirt mi “carson mise?”. Bha mi rud beag fiadhaich ‘s a faighneachd carson a fhuair mis’ e. ’S an uairsin smaoinich mi “uill, carson nach e mise.”

“Faodaidh daoine rud sam bith ag ràdh mu dheidhinn cancer, ach ma chanas cuideigin riut gu bheil e ort - ’s ann an uairsin a tha e gad bhualadh…..ach feumaidh tu dìreach cumail a’ dol….”

Tha Don MacIlleathainn a bha na neach-teagaisg Fòghlaim air a’ Bhlàr A-muigh, dìreach air tòiseachadh mar rùnaire na buidhne. Tha e a-nise as trainge na bha e a-riamh. Ach bliadhna air ais bha a bheatha ann an cunnart.

“Cha be gun robh mi ag iarraidh a bhith nam rùnaire, ach chaill sinn ur rùnaire, cùis duilich. Ach tha gàire agam ga dhèanamh, ‘s tha spòrs na lùib.

Tha am buidheann, anns a bheil 90 buill, air 3 rùnairean a chall ’s a bhliadhna a dh’fhalbh.

“Tha fhios againn gu bheil am bàs romhainn uile. Chan eil sinn gar mealladh fhèin”, thuirt Aonghas MacCarmaig, “ach chan eil sinn ag iarraidh a bhith dubhach mu chùisean nas motha”.

Cancer Club – sgeulachd dhrùidhteach, mhisneachail ris nach sùileachadh tu mu chàirdeas am measg fir Leòdhais, air a riochdachadh le mactv son BBC ALBA .
