BBC ALBA DOCUMENTARY OFFERS SPECIAL JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY ON THE HIGHLAND RAILWAY AS IT CELEBRATES ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY

Join railway enthusiast, Alasdair MacCaluim, on a special journey of discovery on the Highland Railway as he tells the story of this famous network as it marks its 150th anniversary in 2015.

Following a series of celebratory events held throughout the year to mark the anniversary, BBC ALBA brings viewers an insightful documentary, ‘Trusadh - The Highland Railway/Rathad-iarainn na Gàidhealtachd’, which tells the story of one of Britain’s great railways from the build talking only two years to complete the 104mile long line and costing a total of just £919,204, to its present day and which along the way has since weathered war, the rise of road travel, and the nationalisation of the railways.

The Highland Main Line, was the brain child of Joseph Mitchell of Inverness and the link was initially built to provide direct access through the Grampian Mountains from the Highlands to the rest of Britain for Scotland's rich lairds and landowners.

Today, a series of lines run from Perth to Inverness, then out East towards Keith, north up to Wick and Thurso, and across to Kyle of Lochalsh in the West. Together they make up one of the most stunning and isolated railway systems in Europe.

Alasdair MacCaluim said: “The Highland Railway transformed the economy and the way of life of the area and as a rail enthusiast, I enjoyed learning from experts about the history of the network but also about how important it is to the present day for transport and for tourism. More importantly for me, I had the opportunity to do the thing that every little boy dreams of - to drive a train!”

Along the way, Alasdair meets historians, experts, engineers, and fellow enthusiasts and brings this amazing railway’s story to life. From the enormous engineering feats needed to build it, to the massive impact that it had on the Highland communities.

Produced for BBC ALBA by mactv, Trusadh - The Highland Railway/Rathad-iarainn na Gàidhealtachd, is the story of a railway that is truly unique in many different ways and will be broadcast on Monday 30 November at 9pm.

Thig an cois Alasdair MacCaluim, a bha a-riamh air a bheò-ghlacadh le trèanaichean, agus e a’ gabhail cuairt shònraichte air Rathad-Iarainn na Gàidhealtachd gus sgeulachd an lìonra ainmeil innse is e a’ comharrachadh 150 bliadhna ann an 2015.

Tha na loidhnichean seo a’ ruith à Peairt tro Inbhir Nis, dhan Ear gu Baile Chè, gu tuath a dh’Inbhir Ùige agus a dh’Inbhir Theòrsa, agus an uair sin a-null gu Caol Loch Aillse san Iar. Còmhla, ’s iad aon den chruinneachaidhean de ròideaniarainn as bòidhche agus as iomallaiche san Roinn Eòrpa.

Thuirt Alasdair MacCaluim: "Thug rathad-iarainn na Gàidhealtachd cruth-atharrachadh air eaconomaidh is dòigh-beatha na sgìre agus mar dealasach thrèanaichean chòrd e rium fìor mhath ionnsachadh bho eòlaichean mu eachdraidh an lìonra, ach cuideachd mu cho cudromach sa tha e chun an latha an-diugh airson còmhdhail agus airson turasachd. Nas cudromaiche na sin gu pearsanta, bha cothrom agam an rud a dhèanamh a tha a h-uile balach beag ag iarraidh dèanamh - trèana a dhràibheadh!".

Air an t-slighe coinnichidh Alasdair ri eòlaichean, luchd-eachdraidh, innleadairean, agus cuid eile a tha a cheart cho dèidheil air na ròidean-iarainn, agus bheir e sgeulachd an lìonra iongantach seo beò. Bho na dùbhlain mòra innleadaireachd a bh’ ann, chun bhuaidh mhòr a thug e air coimhearsnachdan na Gàidhealtachd.

Rathad-Iarainn na Gàidhealtachd – sgeulachd lìonra rèile a tha dha-rìribh sònraichte ann an iomadh dòigh.
