Anne Lundon on the NC 500

BBC ALBA HITS THE ROAD TO JOURNEY THE ACCLAIMED NORTH COAST 500

A new BBC ALBA series is to explore Scotland’s very own route 66 – the iconic North Coast 500.

Presented by BBC ALBA and BBC Scotland reporter and presenter Anne Lundon, viewers are taken on a journey around the circular route which offers visitors a spectacular array of mountain ranges, lochs, glens, castles, ruins, beaches and wildlife - not forgetting a range of memorable locations to sample some of the best of Scotland’s food and drink. In less than three years, the route has become so popular it regularly ranks among the world’s top ten road trips.

Anne begins her trip in Inverness and heading west, she is immediately in beautiful, unspoilt open country. Tackling the infamous Bealach na Ba, the steepest road in Great Britain, proves a challenge for any driver and a mammoth ascent for cyclists!

Leaving the Applecross Peninsula, the spectacular vistas of Glen Torridon, and Loch Maree open up. The Assynt Geopark has some of the oldest rock formations in the world, dating back 3 billion years. Anne catches up with keen cyclist and fellow broadcaster, Niall Iain Macdonald who has cycled all over the world but comes back as often as he can to tackle his favourite stretches of the route, from Ullapool to Durness and the road from Sandwood Bay to Kinlochbervie.

As Anne meets campervanners, car clubs, bikers, cyclists and even the odd walker, it's clear that doing the NC500 is on everyone's bucket-list.

Anne said: “Some of the destinations on the route are really well-known – like Ullapool and Corrieshalloch Gorge – but when you go and visit them yourself they are simply stunning.

“I'm rather ashamed that I haven't been to many of these places before. There's such a variety of things to see and do. I took the occasional detour off the route, which was also well worth it – to see the Cairns of Camster, Bonar Bridge and to look for dolphins by the Black Isle. I feel as if I've barely scratched the surface of what's here - I'll be back for sure.”

Produced by MAST-ARD STUDIO for BBC ALBA, North Coast 500 is a four-part weekly series starting on Tuesday 16th May at 8.30pm and on consecutive Tuesdays at 8.30pm.

Chaidh slighe an NC 500 a chruthachadh le Iomairt Ceann a Tuath na Gàidhealtachd ’s chaidh a chur air bhog ann an 2014 leis an rothadair ainmeil Mark Beaumont. B’ e turasachd a bhrosnachadh ann an sgìrean iomallach ann an Alba an t-amas a bh’ aca. Tha an cuairt seo timcheall air fìor Cheann a Tuath na h-Alba a’ fuasgladh saoghal iongantach de bheanntan, lochan, glinn, caistealan, fiadh-bheatha agus tràighean dhan an luchd-tadhail - ’s tha sin mus toir thu iomradh air a’ phailteas de thaighean-bìdh agus thaighean-staile a th’ ann cuideachd. Taobh a-staigh beagan is dà bhliadhna tha e air ainmeachadh am measg nan deich turais-rathaid as fheàrr le daoine anns an t-saoghal! Dha na ceudan a th’ air a’ chuairt a dhèanamh, tha a h-uile càil a shùilicheadh tu ann airson turas mìorbhuileach a thoirt do dhaoine.

Tha Anne Lundon, tè-naidheachd BBC ALBA, a bhios ag aithris air an aimsir agus cùisean Eòrpach, gar toirt timcheall air ‘Route 66’ na h-Alba - an NC500. Mar iomadach eileanach, tha Anne eòlach gu leòr air na prìomh shlighean a’ dol bho Ear gu Iar, ach tha na slighean a’ ruith ris a’ chosta cho fada deas ri Loch Carrann, is cho fada tuath ri Diùranais, gu math ùr dhith. Tha seachdain aice airson eòlas a chur air na tha ri fhaicinn, ach a bheil sin fada gu leòr?

Tha toiseach agus deireadh na slighe ann an Inbhir Nis, prìomh bhaile na Gàidhealtachd. Gu ruige seo chan eil comharran no soidhnichean ann ach leis an ionad-seallaidh ùr bho tùr a’ chaisteil, thèid agad air coimhead thairis air a’ bhaile gu Linne Fharair. Dà cheist mhòr – càite am fuirich thu agus dè an cùrsa a ghabhas tu? Tha iomadach àite-fuirich air an t-slighe – cuir àite air dòigh ro làimh ach mura tèid agad air sin a dhèanamh tha campachadh air a’ bhlàr laghail ann an Alba. A-nise… deiseil no an aghaidh na grèine? Chan e saobh-chràbhadh a th’ ann idir ach dìreach gu bheil e a’ faireachdain nàdarach a’ dhol chun na h-Iar.

Mapa agus leabhar-iùil na làimh, a tha i a’ coinneachadh ri agus a’ siubhal an cuideachd muinntir na bhanaichean-campachaidh, na clubaichean chàraichean, motar-baidhseagalan, luchd-rothaireachd agus luchd-coiseachd - tha coltach gur e an NC500 a tha fainear dhan a h-uile duine air an t-seusan seo!
